Men's Basketball Prepping for Road Storm Warning

COLUMBUS - Coming off a road contest on Thursday, the Ohio Dominican Panthers men's basketball team will head on the road for the last conference game before the holiday break next week. 

The road trip concludes on Saturday (Dec. 17) in the confines of the Osborne Center at Lake Erie. Tipoff between the Storm and the Panthers is set for 3:00 PM.

OPENING TIPOFF

  • The Panthers fell 102-64 at Cedarville on Thursday, battling a hot shooting Yellow Jacket team that shot 65% overall and 61% from deep.
  • Sean Marks (Delaware, Ohio) reached a season-high with 24 points on 75% shooting (9-12). Marks scored 20 points in the second half and 12 straight points at one point. He made four threes (on six tries) with four assists and three steals. 
  • Zach Szul (Waterville, Ohio), the team's leading scorer was limited to four points. Szul had six straight games of at least ten points and has led the Panthers in five of the last six games. Overall, Szul leads the team with 12.5 points and 3.0 assists per game. In conference play, Szul is 5th in the G-MAC with 16.4 points per game and 2nd in free throw % (.938). 
  • Ethan Haynes (Florence, Kentucky) scored 11 points, his first double-digit scoring game since January 30, 2021 against Hillsdale. Haynes returned to the starting lineup for the first time since that game as well. 
  • Keshawn Heard (Newark, Ohio) added nine points, giving him at least eight points in each game played this season. He averages 10.6 points per game off the bench. 
  • Ohio Dominican averages 35.2 rebounds per game this season (5th in G-MAC), including 11.2 offensive boards. The Panthers rank 3rd in the G-MAC in offensive rebounds and 9th for defensive rebounds. 
  • This season, ODU averages 22.4 points from the bench. Eight different times this year, a player has scored at least ten points, coming off the bench. Within the G-MAC, Ohio Dominican ranks fourth for bench points per game behind Kentucky Wesleyan (29.8), Findlay (24.8) and Trevecca (23.0). 
  • In the Division II series history (dating back to 2010-11), ODU and Lake Erie have met 23 times. Ohio Dominican is 13-10 against the Storm, having won eight of ten games within the G-MAC era (2017-18 to present). The teams split the 2021-22 series with each home team winning a contest. 
  • In ten contests this season, Ohio Dominican has had seven different lineups as the Panthers have battled a number of injuries within their rotation. 

ABOUT THE STORM

  • Lake Erie is 5-5 overall and 2-2 in the conference after the Storm played at Walsh on Wednesday evening. 
  • The Storm fell 70-51 to the Cavaliers, snapping a two-game winning streak. Leon Hughes made three triples in a 15 point, off-the-bench effort for the Green and White. Caleb Piks added 11 points as the only other player in double figures. 
  • Lake Erie has played four common opponents so far (three in the G-MAC). Lake Erie is 1-3 against those teams. The Storm defeated Tiffin but fell to Cedarville, UIndy and Walsh. 
  • Jonny Manning leads the Storm in points, rebounds and blocks. The sophomore tallies 15.1 points, 8.5 rebounds and 1.6 blocks per game for Lake Erie. Manning has scored 10+ points in eight games with four double-doubles this season. Manning leads the G-MAC in rebounding and double-doubles. 
  • PJ Jones (9.7 PPG), Leon Hughes (9.0 PPG) and Jordan Burge (9.0 PPG) are all nearing double-digit scoring for the season. 
  • Hughes is the team leader in assists, averaging 3.0 dimes per contest in the 2022-23 season.
  • Lake Erie averages 70.4 points scored, 34.8 rebounds, and is shooting .430 overall (.335 from deep). The opposition is scoring 72.2 points per game, grabbing 36.1 rebounds and holding a .457 clip shooting (.370 from three).

Ohio Dominican will head into the holiday break with a home non-conference matchup on Monday (Dec. 19) against Wheeling at 5:00 PM.
