Panthers Drop Finale in Painesville; Earn Fourth Seed for Tournament

PAINESVILLE, Ohio – In a thriller, the Ohio Dominican Panthers (19-9, 13-7 G-MAC) closed the regular season with a matchup with the Lake Erie Storm (21-7, 15-5 G-MAC) on Saturday (Feb. 28) afternoon.

Saturday's contest saw 15 lead changes and 12 ties as the Storm won 87-86 on a late layup inside of the Osborne Center.  

BOX SCORE NOTES
  • Derek Goodman led with 23 points on eight-of-11 shooting, making three three pointers on five tries and all four free throw attempts. He also had four rebounds and three assists.
  • Caleb Conard scored 15 points on five-of-nine shooting, also going four-of-four at the line and making his lone three point try. He led all players with nine rebounds and was tied for the team lead with five assists.
  • Elijah Hinton added 11 points and six rebounds with four field goals (two threes).
  • Carson Seemann and Logan Ryan each scored ten points in the game. Seemann was five-of-seven at the free throw line with five rebounds while Ryan had four field goals, including two threes.
  • Terrance Broughton dished out five assists with three points (all free throws) and three rebounds.
  • Kenny Scott went six-for-six on free throws for his afternoon.
  • Ohio Dominican finished with a 54.2% field goal percentage (26-48), a 52.9% (9-17) mark from three and 78.1% at the free throw line (25-32 – a season-high).
  • Lake Erie had a 44.3% (31-70) field goal percentage with shooting 31.4% (11-35) from deep and 73.7% (14-19) at the stripe.
  • ODU won the rebounding battle 32-22 despite being out-rebounded on the offensive glass 10-4.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Lake Erie started the game with a 12-6 lead with 13:48 left in the first half.
  • Three pointers by Hinton and Seemann helped ODU to an 8-2 run as they pulled even at 14-14 two minutes later.
  • The Storm gained a 21-16 lead at the halfway point of the half but ODU rallied with a 8-2 spurt to take a 24-23 lead with eight minutes remaining.
  • The game was tied three times (26-26, 27-27 and 30-30) before Lake Erie opened a 39-33 lead with 3:49 left before halftime.
  • Ryan scored the next ODU points with two three pointers, getting ODU within two points at 43-41 with 2:20 remaining.
  • Lake Erie pushed the advantage to 47-42, leading to a mini Goodman 6-0 run with back-to-back three pointers.
  • The game was tied 50-50 at halftime.
    • Ohio Dominican shot 60.9% (14-23) overall, 70.0% (7-10) from deep and 71.4% (15-21) from the free throw line in the opening 20 minutes.
  • Hinton made a three pointer to open the second half, putting ODU ahead 53-50.
  • Six straight Storm points allowed Lake Erie to take a 56-53 two minutes into the half.
  • The teams exchanged the lead four times over a six minute span until Lake Erie made a three pointer with 12:41, leading 71-66.
  • A 7-0 ODU run allowed the Panthers to claw back and take the lead away once again, 73-71 with 9:15 remaining.
  • Lake Erie used nine of the next 12 points to open a pair of four-point leads (77-73 and 80-76) as the game neared the final four minutes.
  • In one minute, Conard scored four consecutive points to tie the game at 80 meanwhile, Lake Erie scored five straight as a response to lead 85-80 with 2:08 left.
  • Within the final two minutes, Ohio Dominican orchestrated a 6-0 run with Goodman nailing a jumper for a 86-85 lead with 24 seconds left.
  • Lake Erie called timeout and was able to take the 87-86 lead with 11 seconds left on a Jake Leibacher layup.
  • Ohio Dominican had a chance at the win following a pair of timeouts with Broughton's game-winner at the buzzer coming up short.
UP NEXT
  • With the conclusion of the regular season, the Panthers wrapped up with the fourth seed in the 2026 Great Midwest Men's Basketball Championship Tournament. They will host the 5-seeded Findlay Oilers on Tuesday (March 3) at 7:00 PM inside of Alumni Hall.
