Panthers Head to Cedarville for Road Matchup

COLUMBUS - After playing seven of the first nine games at home, the Ohio Dominican Panthers men's basketball team will head on the road for the final two conference games before the holiday break next week. 

The road trip begins on Thursday (Dec. 15) at Cedarville at 7:45 PM against the Yellow Jackets of Cedarville University.

OPENING TIPOFF

  • The Panthers split the G-MAC home contests last week as they defeated Northwood 61-49 on Thursday (Dec. 8) and then fell 80-74 to #7/6 Hillsdale on Saturday (Dec. 10). 
  • To this point in the season, Ohio Dominican sits at 3-6 overall and 1-3 in the G-MAC. 
  • Zach Szul (Waterville, Ohio) led the Panthers offense in both games last week. He scored a game-high 17 points against Northwood and 26 versus Hillsdale (8-8 at the free throw line). Szul has six straight games of at least ten points and has led the Panthers in five straight games. Overall, Szul leads the team with 13.4 points (9th in the G-MAC) and 3.2 assists per game. In conference play, Szul is 2nd in the G-MAC with 19.5 points per game, 2nd in free throw % (.929) and 6th in field goal % (.556). 
  • Kayin Derden (Columbus, Ohio), in his last two games, has scored 14.0 points per game off the bench. Derden scored a career-high 17 points against Hillsdale, making all five three point attempts. In the last two games, he has shot a .529 (9-17) field goal clip and .727 (8-11) three point clip. 
  • Keshawn Heard (Newark, Ohio)  returned from injury with 13 points against Hillsdale, giving him double-digit scoring in three of four games played this season, averaging 11.0 points per game. 
  • Marcus Johnson (Columbus, Ohio) added his first career double-double on Thursday with 11 points and ten rebounds against Northwood. 
  • This season, ODU averages 23.0 points from the bench. Eight different times this year, a player has scored at least ten points, coming off the bench. Within the G-MAC, Ohio Dominican ranks third for bench points per game behind Kentucky Wesleyan (29.4) and Findlay (25.67). Trevecca is tied with ODU for third place. 
  • In the Division II series history (dating back to 2010-11), ODU and Cedarville have met 11 times. Cedarville leads the D2 series 8-3 with the last three victories. 

ABOUT THE YELLOW JACKETS

  • Cedarville sits with a 6-3 overall record and 1-2 G-MAC mark entering play on Thursday. 
  • The Yellow Jackets went 5-1 in non-conference play but have dropped two of the last three games within the conference. Cedarville lost to Hillsdale (72-60) to open conference action and defeated Lake Erie on the road in OT (91-88). In their last game, Cedarville fell on the road to Kentucky Wesleyan 82-50. Jayvon Maughmer led the Yellow Jackets with 11 points in Owensboro. 
  • Maughmer leads the Jackets with 19.2 points per game, sitting second in the conference. He is shooting .523 from the floor - 2nd best on the team. Maughmer leads the team in assists, 3.2 per contest. 
  • Jacob Drees averages 13.7 points, 7.6 rebounds and 1.9 blocks per game while shooting .590 overall. He ranks 2nd in FG% and blocks, 3rd in rebounds and eighth in scoring in the G-MAC. 
  • Grant Whisman is the third player in double figures with 12.0 points per game. 
  • Cedarville averages 78.1 points scored, 35.7 rebounds, and is shooting .455 overall (.334 from deep). The opposition is scoring 72.3 points per game, grabbing 36.0 rebounds and holding a .450 clip shooting (.356 from three). 
  • Cedarville is first in the conference in scoring offense, blocks (4.11) and three pointers per game (11.2), 2nd in turnover margin (2.33) and 3rd in assist/turnover ratio (1.33).
