Career Scoring Highs From Marks and Szul Lift ODU over Ohio Valley in Overtime, 92-82

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Sophomore Sean Marks (Delaware, Ohio) and freshman Zach Szul (Waterville, Ohio) combined for 60 points Saturday afternoon, as the Ohio Dominican men's basketball team defeated Ohio Valley in overtime, 92-82.

INDIVIDUAL NUMBERS

  • Marks and Szul each posted career high scoring totals Saturday with 33 and 27 points respectively.
  • The sophomore guard was a perfect 13-for-13 at the foul line, and scored 12 of ODU's 20 points in the extra period. Marks was 10-for-10 at the charity stripe in overtime.
  • Szul's career scoring high comes off a 20 point-performance Monday against the same Fighting Scots. The freshman scored 15 points over the second half and overtime, and shot 10-for-20 from the field. Szul also collected a career-high nine rebounds and tied a personal-best with five assists.
  • Sophomore Alek West (Sylvania, Ohio) added 11 points and a team-high six assists.
  • Making three of his four triple attempts was freshman Brandon Gibson (Dayton, Ohio), as he finished with 11 points and four rebounds. Gibson now has double-digit points in back-to-back outings.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Trailing by four points with less than two minutes remaining in regulation, the Panthers received layups from Marks and West, with the latter coming in the final 10 seconds to tie the game at 72-all.
  • Ohio Valley had a three-point attempt at the buzzer go wide, sending the game into overtime.
  • In the extra session, Ohio Dominican outscored the Fighting Scots 20-10, including an 11-1 run over the final 1:02.
  • The Panthers made 31-of-64 shots (.484), while holding OVU to a .475 clip. ODU was 4-for-5 from the field in overtime.
  • An early 8-0 run gave ODU a 29-22 lead. The spurt was part of a 16-5 ODU scoring run, highlighted by a quartet of three pointers, giving the Panthers a 35-25 lead with 4:20 to play in the first half.
  • After the Scots closed the deficit to five, ODU scored 10 of the final 15 points of the first half to lead 45-35 at the intermission. The 45-point half ties for the most ODU has recorded in a 20-minute period this season.
  • Ohio Valley came out of the break on a 12-3 scoring run, over the first four minutes, closing the ODU advantage to one point, 48-47.
  • The remainder of the second half was played within a seven-point window, with neither side leading by more than four points. With 20 total lead changes and 12 ties, the game was destined for extra time.

GAME NOTES

  • Ohio Dominican is now 2-0 in overtime games this season, and improves to 5-2 all-time under head coach Kelly Winter.
  • The Panthers' 92 points marked a season-best and the first 90-point performance since the team scored 99 in a double overtime win over Ohio Valley on Jan. 23, 2020.
