Box Score COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio Dominican's men's basketball team survived a double overtime scare from Ohio Valley, defeating the Scots 99-93 Thursday evening in Alumni Hall.
With ODU down two at 71-69 with 9.8 seconds remaining, a pair of Hasan Varence (Queens, New York) free throws would tie the game at 71-71 and a Michael Scott (Hebron Ky.) block on the defensive end would send the game into the first overtime period.
In that first overtime period, Sean Marks (Delaware, Ohio) poured in the final six points in the overtime period, his last to make the score 82-79 and a three from Parker Black of OVU with 11 seconds remaining would send the game into the second overtime.
In the second overtime, the Panthers would open on an 8-1 run in the first four minutes to open a seven point lead after a pair of Scott free throws. Marks led the way once again in the second overtime scoring eight points with a three and five free throws.
The Panthers finished the game shooting 90.3%from the free throw line making 28 of their 31 free throws.
Three Panthers secured double-doubles led by Michael Scott's 17 points and 10 assists which included five rebounds before he fouled out in the second overtime period. Varence notched his ninth double-double of the season scoring 16 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Sophomore Arius Jones (Lansing, Mich.) secured his first double-double of his career notching a career-high 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting including 4-of-5 from the charity stripe and grabbing 10 rebounds.
Redshirt freshman Ethan Haynes (Florence, Ky.) scored a career-high 22 points in the win to lead ODU in scoring while also grabbing six rebounds. Marks also set a career-high scoring 21 points, including 7-of-8 from the line in a career-high 32 minutes played.
A sloppy first half saw 27 combined turnovers with ODU having 14 to the Scots 13. ODU was able to shoot 47% (15-for-32) in the first half but just 25% from three (4-of-16). The ODU defense had seven steals in the first half and the Scots shot just 40% from the floor (12-for-30) and 36.4% from three (4-for-11).
With the Panthers leading 13-5 with 15:20 remaining in the first half, a 15-7 run from OVU gave them their first lead of the game at 20-19 with 6:40 remaining. With Ohio Valley leading 26-21 with 4:41 remaining in the half, the Panthers would close the half with an 18-4 run to send the teams to the locker room with ODU leading 39-30. Five Panthers scored during the run led by Haynes with six and Jones with four.
In the second half, the Panther lead grew to 11 at 46-35 on a Varence layup with 14:37 remaining before a ferocious 19-5 run from the Scots gave them a three point advantage at 54-51 with 9:02 remaining in regulation. ODU would regain the advantage sparking a 7-0 run led by four points from Marks and three from Varence.
Ohio Valley regained momentum grabbing a two point lead at 67-65 with 2:00 remaining in regulation and with the game tied at 69 apiece after a pair of Scott free throws with 1:18 remaining, a score from Ohio Valley gave them the lead with 1:08 to play. After a Scott turnover, an OVU three went begging and was secured by Haynes where he pushed the ball up the floor to Varence who drew the foul where he made both free throws to send the game into the first overtime.
ODU shot 42% from the floor (31-for-74) but just 24.3% (9-for-37) from behind the arc. The Panther defense held OVU to 45% shooting (32-for-71) and 38.7% from behind the arc (12-for-31) with the Scots shooting 17-of-24 from the line. OVU was 9-of-10 at the line in regulation but struggled in overtimes from the charity stripe going just 8-of-14.
With the win, Ohio Dominican advances to 8-11 overall on the season and are 5-5 in conference play while Ohio Valley drops to 4-15 overall and 1-9 in conference play.
The Panthers will hit the road to continue G-MAC play as they travel to Tiffin this Saturday with tip set for 3 p.m.
