GAME NOTES
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio Dominican's men's basketball team heads to Painesville on Thursday to take on Lake Erie before coming back home to host Cedarville Saturday afternoon in Alumni Hall.
The contest with Lake Erie is scheduled to tip off at 5:30 p.m. in the Osborne Athletic Center with the Panthers and Yellow Jackets tipping off at 1 p.m. Saturday.
About Ohio Dominican
The Panthers have won three straight heading into the week as they knocked off Hillsdale 77-64 last Saturday.
ODU had four players in double-figures led by Hasan Varence (Queens, New York) with 23 points and seven rebounds including three assists and three steals which resulted in him being named the G-MAC Player of the Week for the second time this season.
Varence was also named to the Bevo Francis Top 100 Watch List by Small College Basketball announced Wednesday by the organization.
Sam Hickey (Toledo, Ohio) also had 18 points and six rebounds in the win over Hillsdale. Varence and Hickey each have entered the top five on the all-time scoring list at Ohio Dominican with Varence fourth at 1,485 points and Hickey just behind at 1,457.
Ethan Haynes (Florence, Ky.) provided the spark off the ODU bench Saturday afternoon scoring 15 points on 5-of-9 from behind the arc which was a career-high in both categories for the redshirt freshman.
A year ago, the Panthers swept the season series with Lake Erie by scores of 83-78 at home and in Painesville by a final score of 76-73.
About Lake Erie
The Storm come into the week with a 10-7 overall record and are 4-3 overall in the conference after an 80-73 win over Malone last week.
Lake Erie has two players averaging double-figures led by Gabe Kynard who is the conference's leading scorer at 20.4 points per game and Kevin Peterson at 10.8 points. The offense scores 76.9 points per contest while the defense allows just 69 points per game.
This season at home, the Storm have a 6-2 record with their only losses coming out of the conference against Wayne St. (Mich.) and Le Moyne.
About Cedarville
The Yellow Jackets come into the week with an even 8-8 overall record and are 4-3 in the conference, losing their last three G-MAC contests to the Panthers, Findlay and Walsh.
Mixed in, was a win over Ohio Christian on Saturday, January 4.
In the earlier meeting, the Panthers defeated the Yellow Jackets 78-71 in the Callan Athletic Center.
The Yellow Jackets score 80.9 points per game with five players averaging double-figures led by Brandon Maughmer at 15.1 points per game and Quinton Green at 14.7. Connor TenHove averages 13.3 points per game and 7.5 rebounds per game with Kollin Van Horn averaging 11.5.
Against the Panthers earlier in the season, Van Horn led the Jackets with 24 points while Green had 15. The Panther defense held the Cedarville offense to 45% shooting and just 26.7% from behind the arc.
Throughout the series, the Yellow Jackets have only come to Columbus once, when the Jackets beat ODU 75-68 on January 6, 2018.
