Men's Basketball to Travel to Pitt-Johnstown For First Ever Meeting

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio Dominican's men's basketball team hits the road this Saturday to match up with Pitt-Johnstown with tip set for 3 p.m. in the Sports Center.

The Panthers are coming into the week with a 1-1 record after an 87-86 double overtime win over Wayne St. and an 85-82 loss at home against No. 19 Ashland.

Senior Sam Hickey (Toledo, Ohio) is leading the Panther offense averaging 28 points per contest in the two games with junior Michael Scott (Hebron, Ky.) averaging 14 per contest.

In the double overtime win over Wayne St., senior Hasan Varence (Queens, New York) and junior Matt King (Mason, Ohio) each recorded double-doubles with Varence scoring 20 points and grabbing 13 rebounds while King finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Hickey finished the contest with 27 points and senior Michael Simon's (Hilliard, Ohio) pair of free throws with a second left led the Panthers to the victory which was also head coach Kelly Winter's first career win.

In the contest with Ashland, Hickey poured in 29 points while also grabbing seven rebounds and Scott finished with a career-high 22 points on his 10-of-14 shooting.

The Panthers held the lead the entire first half before Ashland grabbed their first lead with 13 minutes to play. After going back-and-forth for the remainder of the game, a three point look from Ethan Haynes (Florence, Ky.) with five seconds remaining to take the lead hit the back iron and fell to the Eagles.

The Panthers shot 42.2% from the floor in the two contests and just 28% from distance but shot a stellar 87% from the line which is currently 10th in the country.

About Pitt- Johnstown

The Mountain Cats are coming into the week starting their season with a 2-1 record and are coming off a 101-81 win over Carlow Wednesday night.

Pitt-Johnstown has won their last 14 of their last 15 games at home over the last two seasons while the Panthers have won five of their last six on the road spanning into last season.

The Mountain Cats are averaging 85 points per game while giving up 76 and have a field goal percentage of 49.4% in the first three games of the year. UPJ has four scorers averaging double-figures led by John Paul Kromka at 15.3 and Caiden Landis at 14.3. Fred Mulbah and Joe Batt are each averaging 12.3 point per game, respectively. Kromka also provides a defensive presence in the paint for UPJ recording seven blocks through the first three games and has averaged 7.7 rebounds per game.
