FULL GAME NOTES
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio Dominican men's basketball team will tip-off its season with back-to-back regional road games this weekend.
The Panthers will begin the 2015-16 campaign at 4 p.m. on Friday, November 13, when they travel to face Maryville out of the Great Lakes Valley Conference. ODU will then stay at Maryville for a 4 p.m. start against another GLVC opponent Truman State on Saturday, November 14.
About Ohio Dominican
Ohio Dominican is coming off its best season in its short stint at the NCAA Division II level. The Panthers were 9-18 overall in 2014-15, as they won seven games in the GLIAC, just one less than ODU had logged total in their first four seasons in the conference.
The Black and Gold will look to rely on its top two returning scorers in seniors Trent Weaver (Columbus, OH) and Chad Nelson (Pickerington, OH). Weaver, a 2015-16 Preseason First Team All-GLIAC South selection, led the team in scoring last season at 13.7 points per game, while grabbing a team best eight rebounds per contest. He enters the 2015-16 campaign eighth in school history in rebounds with 543. He also comes in at number seven in ODU history in free throw makes, 261, and free throw attempts, 344.
Nelson averaged 13.5 points per game a year ago as he shot over 40 percent from the field, while also dishing out close to three assists per game. With 95 career makes from three-point range, Nelson sits just 14 shy of cracking the top 10 in school history.
The two seniors have combined to appear in 161 games, including 136 starts, and each has an opportunity to join 20 other Panther players in the 1,000 career point club.
ODU also returns a group of sophomores which gained a bevy of experience during the 2014-15 campaign as Shemar Waugh (Columbus, OH), Ronnie Williams (Columbus, OH),Mike DeLeon (Powell, OH), and Adam Cytlak (Van Buren, OH) each played a role for the Panthers, combining for 58 starts and over 2,300 minutes played.
In their first season with ODU a year ago, Williams and Waugh ranked third and fourth on the team in scoring averages at 8.5 and 7.6 respectively. Williams led the team in three point shooting percentage at 42.2 percent, while Waugh dealt out a team high 3.3 assists per contest.
DeLeon averaged 7.2 points and 5.6 rebounds per contest in his freshman campaign, recording two double-doubles on the season.
About Maryville
Maryville is coming off a 2014-15 campaign which saw them go 12-17 overall and 6-12 in the GLVC. The Saints made an appearance in the GLVC Tournament Quarterfinals, and faced two common opponents a year ago in Lake Superior State and Cedarville. Both the Panthers and Saints dropped each contest to LSSU and CU.
The Saints were picked to finished fifth in the GLVC West this season as they lost their top two scorers from a year ago. Center Max Mischkulnig returns for his junior year as he averaged 13.9 points and 4.3 rebounds per contest last season.
The Series
Ohio Dominican and Maryville have met just once, which was the opening tilt of the 2012-13 season. The Saints won the contest 69-56, as Nelson and Weaver combined for five points off the bench.
