Second Half Push Not Enough, Panthers Fall 82-73

Box Score

GREENSBURG, Pa. -- The Ohio Dominican men's basketball team's late second half rally fell short as they were defeated on the road by Seton Hill, 82-73.

With the loss, ODU falls to 1-3 on the season, while Seton Hill improves to 1-2 overall.

The Panthers received double digit scoring from their junior trio. Trent Weaver (Columbus, OH) finished the game with 19 points and nine rebounds, going 7-7 from the foul line. Mark Minch (West Chester, OH) also scored 19 points for ODU, adding five rebounds. Chad Nelson (Columbus, OH) went 8-8 from the foul line, both season highs, as he scored 18 points.

ODU shot just 35.4 percent (23-65) from the field, and made only three of 18 three point attempts. The Panthers did however shoot well from the foul line, going 24-28 from the charity stripe.

The Panthers and Griffins each started off hot offensively as each team scored eight points in the first five minutes of action.

Twice in the first half ODU was able to take a five point lead off baskets from freshman Ronnie Williams (Columbus, OH) with the second basket giving the Panthers a 22-17 lead with 11:28 left to play in the first half.

A 14-3 run by the Griffins gave them their largest lead of the first half at 31-25 with 4:10 left before break. A three pointer and a layup from Nelson in the closing minute cut the SHU lead to 37-36 at halftime.

The Black and Gold got down by as many as 14 points in the second half, but a 9-0 run capped off by a Nelson three pointer cut the deficit to 60-55 with 12:00 remaining. The Panthers were able to tie the game at 67-67 with 3:57 to play after two Weaver free throws.

ODU was unable to take their first lead since the 8:20 mark of the first half though, as SHU closed the game on a 15-6 run to take the 82-73 victory.

Though the Panthers were outrebounded 37-36, they held a 15-5 advantage in second chance points. ODU also held a 15-9 advantage in points off turnovers.

The Panthers will get the remainder of the week off before opening up GLIAC play at home next week. ODU will welcome Saginaw Valley State for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff on Thursday, December 4.
