The Ohio Dominican men's tennis team earned an opening round win in the GLIAC Tournament on Friday evening, upsetting the 4th seeded Grand Valley State Lakers 5-2.
Doubles play saw the Lakers claim a 2-1 lead taking and taking some of the momentum away from the Panthers. Walid Gtari (Fr./Tunis, Tunisia) and Justin Tjon (Fr./Willemstad, Curacao) earned the lone point for ODU, winning on court one, 8-2.
In singles, the Panthers found a way to take control and were able to even the match at 2-2 when Tyler Johnston (Jr./Willmington, OH) won at #3 singles. Tjon earned the Panthers third point with a straight set win on court five. Tito Bonadonna (Sr./Caracas, Venezuela) gave ODU a 4-2 lead with a 6-3, 6-3 win on court two, leaving the Panthers one point away from the win. Gtari came through in the end on court one, winning his match 6-3 in the deciding set to give the Panthers the win.
The Panthers return to the court tomorrow as they will take on the tournaments #1 seed, Northwood University. The match is set to begin at 3:45 p.m.
