Panthers Play Well, But Fall Short

Box Score

ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Ohio Dominican men's basketball team lost their fourth straight game Saturday afternoon, falling 67-58 to host Grand Valley in the Fieldhouse Arena.

ODU falls to 3-5 on the season (0-4 GLIAC), while the Lakers improve to 7-1 (4-0).

In perhaps one of their better first halves of the season, the Panthers trailed the North Division leaders by just five, 35-30.  The first twenty minutes featured four ties and six lead changes.  ODU did their part to stick around by shooting 8-of-18 from the field for 44.4% and a nifty 75% from the charity stripe, knocking down 12-of-16.

The Lakers jumped out in front early, going on a 6-2 run but the Panthers responded with four straight buckets and led 10-6 with 14:51 on the clock.  The Lakers came back with a 6-0 run to regain the lead 12-10 at the 13:50 mark.

The teams traded points for the next seven minutes, but following a series of Panther turnovers, the Lakers took advantage of the situation and took the largest lead of the half at 29-22, with 4:21 left to play.

Trailing by six and with the clock winding down in the first half, junior Don Kellum (Chicago, Ill.) went to the line for two shots. He missed the front end, but made the second to end the first half, 35-30.

The Lakers opened the second half with a  9-2 run, pushing the score to 44-32 and never trailed. The Panthers, to their credit, wouldn't quit, and fought back to trail by one, 52-51 on senior John Trew's (Barberton, Ohio) jump shot with 5:54 remaining on the clock.

However, GVSU went on a 15-7 run in the final minutes of the game, pushing the final margin to 11.

Senior Morgan Jones (Oberlin, Ohio) paced the Panthers, with 24 points, including 3-of-6 from beyond the arc. The 24 points ties a career high. Trew ended the game with eight points and seven rebounds, while sophomore Bobby Stauffer (Lexington, Ohio) added eight points.

ODU returns home on Thursday, Dec. 13 for a 5:30 conference game against Michigan Tech in Alumni Hall
