Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. - The Ohio Dominican men's tennis team finished a long three days of travel with a hard fought 5-4 win over host Lake Superior State University on Saturday morning. After a tough 6-3 loss on Friday afternooon to Michigan Tech, ODU took 2-of-3 doubles and 3-of-6 singles to finish GLIAC play with a 4-5 conference record.
The Panthers, looking for a bounce back win, entered doubles action looking to gain momentum in the conference showdown. After quickly jumping out to a 6-1 lead on court one, and a 6-3 lead on court two, ODU was able to secure two doubles points. Igor Carvalho (Fr./Belem, Brazil) and Bernardo Feitosa (Jr./Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) won, 8-5, on court one, while Carlos Perez (Jr./Miami, FL) and Greg Dillon (Sr./Fort Wayne, IN) finished off their opponent, 8-5.
With a 2-1 lead heading to singles play, Ohio Dominican needed a quick spark in singles play. Dillon took the opening set on court three, eventually seeing his opponent default the match due to injury, 6-2, 1-0 (def). Perez held on with a highly competitve win on court for, 6-4, 7-6 (4). LSSU took the next fourt matches, leaving Bobby McMahan (Sr./Dunwoody, GA) to decide the fate of the match on court six. With the first set in a opening set tie-breaker and LSSU leading 6-3, McMahan found a way to come from behind to secure the 8-6 tie-breaker win. McMahan ran away with the second set, 6-1, giving the Panthers the road conference win.
ODU will return to action on Tuesday, April 12 as they will play host to Cedarville University in a non-conference match with the Yellow Jackets. The match is set to begin at 4 p.m.
