Men's Hoops Falls on Road to Wayne State, 73-51

Box Score

DETROIT, Mich. – Three Panthers scored in double figures but Ohio Dominican's men's basketball team fell 73-51 to Wayne State in GLIAC South Division play Thursday night at the Matthaei Center.

Freshman forward Bobby Stauffer (Lexington, Ky.) tallied a career-best 14 points on 5-of-6 shooting off the bench to lead the Panthers. It was Stauffer's third-straight game in double figures off the bench for ODU, and he also had a career-high 11 rebounds.

Senior guard Darrien Douglas (Willard, Ohio) had a season-high 11 points and junior guard Morgan Jones (Oberlin, Ohio) also had 11 points with five rebounds.

After trailing by as many as 14 points in the first half, the Panthers made a run before intermission. Freshman forward Brock Ammons (Findlay, Ohio) fell into the Panther bench and saved a loose ball with a behind the back pass to senior guard Kip Kelley (Raleigh, N.C.), who found Douglas streaking up the floor for an acrobatic three-point play as he made the layup with a foul to make it 29-20. Another three-point play by Stauffer on a nifty feed from senior forward Aaron Gibbs (Oberlin, Ohio) cut it to 29-23 with less than three to play.

Moments later, Ammons' first career points came on a two-handed slam to make it 32-25, but the Warriors scored the final two points to take a 34-25 advantage into the break.

The Panthers stayed within nine at 40-31 early in the second half, but Wayne State went on a surge to take a 51-33 lead with 12:18 left and would lead by as many as 22 points in the second half.

Ohio Dominican shot 22-of-53 for the game (41.5 percent), while WSU finished 25-of-56 (44.6 percent). The Panthers were hurt by 19 turnovers to seven for Wayne State, and the Warriors also shot 35 free throws to ODU's 11. ODU also hit just 1-of-14 three-point attempts.

With the setback, the Panthers fell to 2-7 (0-5), while the Warriors improved to 7-1 (4-0 GLIAC).

The Panthers return to action at 7:30 p.m.  Saturday as ODU takes on No. 19 Findlay at UF's Croy Gymnasium.
