Panthers Clipped by Cardinals, 83-79

Box Score

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Despite the first career double-double for junior forward Jake Mochoskay (Mansfield, Ohio), Ohio Dominican's men's basketball team could not overcome 19 turnovers as the Panthers fell 83-79 to visiting Saginaw Valley on Saturday in GLIAC action from Alumni Hall.

Mochoskay set career-highs in both points (20) and rebounds (12) in just 24 minutes off the bench to lead five Panthers in double figures. Sophomore guard Morgan Jones (Oberlin, Ohio) finished with 20 points, junior center Zak Kapron (Malvern, Ohio) had 11 points and eight rebounds, junior forward Aaron Gibbs (Oberlin, Ohio) tallied 10 points and nine rebounds and junior forward John Trew (Barberton, Ohio) chipped in with 10 points and a pair of blocks.

The Panthers had a commanding 46-32 advantage in rebounding while scoring 15 second chance, but their 19 miscues resulted in 22 Cardinal points as Saginaw Valley played from in front for the final 35 minutes of the ballgame. The Cardinals also went to the free throw line 45 times, knocking down 27 of them.

Trailing 20-12 in the first half, ODU scored 10 of the next 14 points to crawl back into the game, with Mochoskay hitting a pair of three-pointers to spark the run. The Cardinals extended the lead back to eight before Zack Joseph (Lewis Center, Ohio) stuck a deep jumper before the halftime buzzer to make it 36-30 at the break.

SVSU's lead grew to 10 at 49-39 eight minutes into the second half when a three-point play by Kapron and an off-balance baseline jumper by Mochoskay trimmed the lead to 49-44. However, that would be as close as the Panthers could get until the waning moments of the contest as the Cardinals would stretch their lead to as many as 13 points.

The Panthers shot 45.3 percent (29-of-64) from the field, including 54.1 percent (20-of-37) in the second half, and grabbed 14 offensive rebounds in the setback.

Ohio Dominican fell to 4-14 (1-11 GLIAC), while the Cardinals improved to 9-9 (5-7 GLIAC). ODU will hit the road for its next contest as the Panthers take on Ashland at 5:30 p.m. Thursday in GLIAC South Division action.
