Brill Leads Explosive Offense in Baseball's Doubleheader at Ohio Valley

PARKERSBURG, W. Va. – Sophomore Alex Brill (Amherst, Ohio) homered twice, and Ohio Dominican baseball went for 19 runs during Friday afternoon's doubleheader at Ohio Valley.

The Panthers powered past the Fighting Scots in Game One, hitting three long balls en route to a 12-4 victory. Ohio Valley jumped out to an early lead in Game Two and held on for an 8-7 decision.

With the split, ODU moves to 16-8 overall and 8-8 in the Great Midwest.

BOX SCORE NOTES

  • Brill went 5-for-9 on the day, with three of his hits going for extra bases. The sophomore homered once in each game and drove in seven runs over 16 innings.
  • Sophomore David Silva (Tontogany, Ohio) and graduate senior Roger Danison (Carroll, Ohio) both logged a pair of doubles, with Silva posting a 4-for-8 effort at the plate.
  • Silva and graduate senior Jace Komminsk (Westerville, Ohio) tied for the team high scoring five runs each on the afternoon.
  • Komminsk and junior Zac Wilson (Hamilton, Ohio) joined Brill in going deep in the opener.
  • Freshman Scott Rouse (Hinckley, Ohio) threw a complete game in the opener, his third of the season, improving to a team-best 4-2 this spring.
  • The Panthers threw four different arms on Friday, all of which were freshmen.

GAME ONE SUMMARY

  • ODU enjoyed a 12-6 advantage in the hit column during the series opener, and six of ODU's hits went for extra bases.
  • The Panthers jumped on the Scots (5-24, 3-19 G-MAC) early, scoring 10 runs in the first four innings to lead 10-1.
  • ODU had two home runs over the four-inning spurt, including a grand slam from Wilson in the top of the third. Komminsk launched a homer in the top of the first as well.
  • After allowing a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the fourth, Rouse retired 12 consecutive batters, reminiscent of his one-hitter against Cedarville earlier in the month.
  • Rouse struck out the side in the seventh and K'd a total of nine batters in the game, setting a new season-high mark.
  • ODU and OVU combined for five runs in the ninth frame. After Silva reached on a lead-off walk, Brill homered to give the Panthers 12 runs in the game.
  • The Fighting Scots' final-inning rally saw OVU score three times on two hits, but Rouse struck out the final batter of the game to secure the 12-4 win for ODU.

GAME TWO SUMMARY

  • For the second time in four games, ODU was plagued with a large deficit in the first inning, as OVU tallied five runs in their first plate appearance of Game Two.
  • Redshirt freshman Tyler Sullivan (Cincinnati, Ohio) returned to his early season form, tossing three scoreless innings in relief. Sullivan conceded just one hit and struck out four batters.
  • The Panthers took advantage of Sullivan's performance and tallied four runs over the first three frames to close their deficit to 5-4.
  • Silva and Brill both drove in runs with doubles, while freshman Lane Marshall (Wooster, Ohio), who went 2-for-3 in the night cap, posted a RBI single in the second inning.
  • Ohio Valley finished the game with only five hits, but found ways to score, which was demonstrated in the sixth inning, where the Scots scored three times with no hits.
  • Trailing by four runs in the final frame, ODU received a one out, three-run home run from Brill, making the score 8-7.
  • Danison followed with a single to right field and was able to move into scoring position as the game's tying run but was stranded on second base.

UP NEXT

  • Ohio Dominican and Ohio Valley are scheduled to conclude their four-game set with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m., Saturday, April 17.
