Ohio Dominican Wins Cedarville Series in South Division Play

CEDARVILLE, Ohio – The Ohio Dominican Panthers (16-17, 11-9 G-MAC) baseball opened play within the South Division of the G-MAC as they traveled to Southwest Ohio for a four-game series with the Cedarville Yellow Jackets (14-22, 8-12 G-MAC).
ODU won the series with a doubleheader sweep of the rally fashion on Friday (April 10), winning games of 7-6 and 12-7. Saturday (April 10) saw the Panthers win game one 3-2 in extra innings before Cedarville avoided the sweep with a 6-2 win.

Game 1 (Friday – W, 7-6)
  • Cedarville scored first in the first inning with a run coming home on a RBI single.
  • ODU took the 2-1 lead in the third inning with one swing of the bat. Jonah Hane singled with one out, stole second and scored on a two-run home run by Gavin Lawler down the left field line.
  • The Yellow Jackets regained the 5-2 lead with two runs in the third and one in each of the fourth and fifth innings.
  • The ODU rally started in the sixth inning with a single run scored. Steven Chapman tripled to right center and crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by Sam Battles. The rally continued into the seventh with four runs coming home. Hane walked before Tryce Chaffin laid down a bunt single, forcing a pitching change. Lawler loaded the bases with a walk – all with no outs. Grant Horne singled home two runs, tying the game at five. After a double steal by Horne and Lawler, Braden Reed put ODU in front 6-5 with a sacrifice fly. Chapman closed the inning with a RBI double as Cedarville went to the bullpen once again.
  • In the bottom of the ninth, Cedarville slimmed the lead to 7-6 and had the Panthers on the ropes. The first two batters of the ninth reached with one run scoring. A passed ball got the tying run to third base but Andrew Holcomb worked out of a jam to keep the Panthers in front 7-6.
  • With the Panthers having eight hits, Chapman and Hane each had two hits with Chapman adding two extra-base hits. Lawler was one-of-two with two runs scored, two RBI, two walks and a stolen base.
  • Jaxson Stried was the starter with four runs allowed (three earned) on five hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Joey Helms (W, 1-0) gave up one run in two innings before Jack Knight tossed two scoreless innings. Holcomb allowed one run in his one inning but got his fourth save of the season.
Game 2 (Friday - W, 12-7 in 7 innings)
  • ODU got four runs on the board before the Yellow Jackets came to bat in the first. Lawler tripled off the center field fence on the second pitch of the game, later scoring on an error by the first baseman. Reed walked to put two runners on base. Chapman doubled home one run with Reed moving to third base. Noah Schacht grounded out and Mason Hess later ended the inning with a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Chapman.
  • Cedarville evened the score at four with a run in the first and three in the second inning. The Jackets took the 6-4 lead in the fifth inning with two runs scoring.
  • Eight runs in the final two inning flipped the script to the Panthers. Lawler tripled to start the sixth for his second triple of the game. Tristan Schuerman singled home Lawler for a 6-5 deficit. Schuerman stole second and later stole third base on a double steal after Chapman was intentionally walked. Schacht walked to load the bases. Horne singled home two runs amid a bases-clearing play where a third run scored when the right fielder slipped on the wet grass. Hess greeted a new Yellow Jackets reliever with an RBI double to left field. Chaffin ended the six-run frame with a RBI single to center field as ODU led 10-6.
  • In the seventh inning, Reed singled and Chapman walked with one out. Schacht doubled home Reed and Horne plated Chapman with a sacrifice fly.
  • Cedarville made it 12-7 with a run in the bottom of the seventh as ODU completed the Friday sweep in the rain.
  • In a ten-hit effort, three Panthers had multi-hit games. Lawler had three hits including two triples (tied for most in the D2 era), scoring twice. Schacht and Hess each had two hits with a single and a double each and two RBI. Chapman walked three times (two intentional walks was tied for most in the D2 era), scoring three times with reaching base four times total. Horne plated three runs.
  • Landon Ringhiser pitched four innings, giving up five runs (two earned) on six hits and two walks. Jared Hoersten (W, 3-0) finished the game with two runs allowed in three innings, fanning five batters.  
Game 3 (Saturday – W, 3-2 in 8 innings)
  • For the second time in the series, Cedarville scored in the first inning – leading 1-0.
  • Two innings later, the Panthers tied the game with a run scoring on an error. Lawler singled and was on the move on a Chapman single. Going to third base, the throw from left field went wide of third base, Lawler was able to score.
  • With the bases loaded in the fifth inning, Chapman cashed in on a situation as he drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to center field. ODU led 2-1 before the Yellow Jackets tied the game in the bottom of the sixth.
  • In extra innings, Schacht singled home the "ghost runner" on second base, Sawyer Hamsher.
  • Once again, the Yellow Jackets threatened to score against Holcomb. A single and walk loaded the bases but Holcomb got the final two outs with strikeouts as ODU secured the series win with a 3-2 win.
  • All nine starters in the lineup had a hit with Horne having two hits in the game.
  • Chapman was the starter, going six strong innings with two runs (one earned) on six hits and five strikeouts. Jeremy Ramirez (W, 4-2) and Holcomb (Sv, 5) combined for two scoreless frames with four strikeouts together.
Game 4 (Saturday – L, 6-2 in 7 innings)
  • With three runs in the second inning and two in the third inning, Cedarville led 5-0 after three innings.
  • ODU loaded the bases with two walks and a single in the fourth inning. Lawler singled home a pair of runs as the lead was slimmed to 5-2.
  • The Yellow Jackets added an insurance run in the sixth for a 6-2 final score.
  • Five different players tallied hits in the game.
  • Colin Hennessey (L, 1-2) took the loss with five runs (three earned) in 2.1 innings. Eric Geddes threw 2.2 scoreless innings of work with two hits allowed. Andrew Mouch gave up one unearned run in one inning.
Ohio Dominican will host the Walsh Cavaliers for a battle of the top teams in the South Division next weekend.
