COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio Dominican Panthers (13-15, 8-8 G-MAC) baseball team began the month of April with a four-game series with the Thomas More Saints (14-18, 6-10 G-MAC) before the Easter holiday at Frank Damian Field at Panther Valley.
For the fourth straight series, the Panthers have split with the opponents, putting them at 8-8 in conference play. Thomas More won Thursday's (April 2) opener 8-7 before ODU walloped the Saints 19-9 to even the series at 1-1. Friday (April 3) saw the teams split a pair of one-run games. The Saints won the third game 6-5 with the Panthers closing the series with a 5-4 win.
Game 1 (Thursday - L, 8-7)
- The Panthers started the scoring with a run in the first inning. Gavin Lawler opened the game with a double to right field and scored on a RBI single by Steven Chapman.
- Thomas More gained the 2-1 lead with a pair of runs in the second inning.
- A four-spot for the Panthers in the third inning pushed ODU in front 5-2. Lawler doubled for the second time in the game. He later scored on an error by the third baseman on a fielder's choice by Carson Willis. Braden Reed doubled home Willis for a 3-2 lead. Grant Horne singled and stole second base, allowing Reed to score when the throw to second base went awry. Jonah Hane capped the frame with a RBI single, bringing Horne home.
- In the seventh inning, the Saints got within a run at 5-4 after two runs scored.
- ODU answered with another double in the seventh inning. Lawler started the inning with a hit by pitch, before later stealing second base. Reed scored Lawler with another RBI double as the Panthers led 6-4 going to the eighth inning.
- The Saints had a big inning in the eighth with four runs scoring on four hits and an error as they regained the lead, 8-6.
- The Panthers slimmed the lead in the eighth inning with a key RBI double. Hane greeted a new Saints reliever with a bunt single and getting to second on an error. Sam Battles lined a double to left center for a one-run deficit. ODU got the go-ahead run to the plate in the eighth and ninth innings, falling 8-7.
- Horne led with three hits while Lawler, Reed and Hane had two hits. Lawler and Reed each doubled twice with Lawler scoring three times and Reed plating two runs.
- Jaxson Stried pitched into the seventh inning with four runs (two earned) allowed in in 6.2 innings. He walked no batters and fanned six. Jeremy Ramirez (L, 3-2) gave up four runs in two thirds of an inning. Andrew Holcomb finished the game with 1.2 innings pitched of scoreless relief.
Game 2 (Thursday - W, 19-9 in 7 innings)
- Two big ODU innings overshadowed the Saints scoring first with one run in the top of the first. Ten men came to the plate in the bottom of the the first with five runs scoring for the Panthers. Reed doubled home two runs with Noah Schacht and Tryce Chaffin adding RBI singles in the frame. An error added the fifth run with ODU lead 5-1 after one inning.
- ODU's best inning of the season so far came in the second inning as eight runs scored. Over the course of 14 batters, ODU had six hits, three walks, one hit batter and an error put ODU ahead 13-1. Reed added his second two-run double in the game and then singled home a run later in the inning. Mason Hess drove in a run with a RBI double as Lawler and Horne both had run scoring hits.
- Chaffin doubled home a run in the third inning for a 14-1 lead.
- Two runs in the fourth and four runs in the fifth inning with the Saints cut the ODU advantage down to 14-7.
- ODU scored five runs in the final two innings, creating a 19-7 lead entering the seventh inning. Lawler had a RBI double in the fifth as it was 15-7. In the sixth, Reed got his third double of the game and scored on a RBI single by Schacht. Hane singled home a run with a RBI groundout by Tristan Schuerman and a sac fly by Chaffin.
- Thomas More scored two final runs in the seventh inning, closing the scoring at 19-9.
- Reed had a four-hit game with three doubles (fourth three double game in the D2 era), driving in five runs total. Lawler, Chapman, Schacht, Hess and Chaffin had two hits as all starters reached base and notched hits.
- Landon Ringhiser (W, 4-2) got the win despite allowing seven runs in 4.2 innings. Aidan Piatt threw 1.1 scoreless innings with Nick Cody giving up two runs (both unearned) in his inning.
Game 3 (Friday - L, 6-5 in 7 innings)
- TMU started with two runs in the first but ODU had the lead be short-lived for the Saints. An immediate four-run first inning put ODU in front. Lawler hit a lead-off solo blast to right field to start the rally. Chapman singled and later scored on a RBI double by Garrett Roach. Schacht capped the rally with a two-run single as the Panthers led 4-2.
- Four runs in the Saints' third inning flipped the game towards TMU 6-4.
- ODU had another rally coming in the fourth inning but only got one run home. Lawler led off with a single to left field. A swipe of second base and subsequent throwing error allowed Chapman to single him home in the next at-bat. The Panthers got the go-ahead run at the plate in the final four innings but could not close the gap completely.
- Lawler, Chapman and Chaffin each had two hits in the contest.
- Chapman (L, 1-4) was the starter with six runs (five earned) in four innings pitched. Jack Knight followed with three scoreless innings of relief.
Game 4 (Friday - W, 5-4)
- A scoreless first inning started the finale with the Panthers taking a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Hess singled and got into scoring position on a double by Battles. Hane scores Hess with a sacrifice fly to left field.
- Two more runs for ODU came home in the third inning. Lawler walked and stole second. Horne singled him to third base with runners on the corners. Horne then swiped second base to put two runners in scoring position. Chapman grounded out to plate Lawler. An error on the next play allowed Horne to score as the lead ballooned to 3-0.
- Both teams brought runs home in the fifth and sixth innings. Thomas More scored first in the fifth as Lawler had a RBI single, scoring Schuerman - who doubled to lead off the inning. After a TMU run one inning later, Reed drilled a solo home run to left field, matching the response and putting ODU ahead 5-2.
- The Saints scored once in the seventh and ninth inning, getting within 5-4 but the Panthers closed the door with the go-ahead run on base.
- Lawler and Battles each had a multi-hit game.
- Colin Hennessey (W, 1-1) pitched 5.1 innings of two-run ball, scattering five hits and three walks. Jared Hoersten and Andrew Mouch allowed a run each with Holcomb closing the game for his third save.
Ohio Dominican will host Ashland in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday (April 7) at 3:00 PM.
