Panthers Conclude Homestand With Tiffin Series Split

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio Dominican Panthers (8-11, 4-4 G-MAC) baseball team continued conference play with the Tiffin Dragons (9-14, 4-4 G-MAC) this weekend at Frank Damian Field at Panther Valley.

Ohio Dominican started the series with a sweep on Saturday (March 21), winning the first two games 9-7 and 12-4. Tiffin pulled the sweep on Sunday (March 22) with wins of 4-0 and 9-7.

Game 1 (Saturday - W, 9-7)
  • Ohio Dominican scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning as they started the scoring. Will Schirmer led off with a walk and got into scoring position with a groundout. Steven Chapman singled home Schirmer with a RBI knock to left field. Chapman stole second and Jack Wells walked to put two runners on base. Grant Horne plated Chapman with a RBI single and an error allowed Wells to score.
  • Tiffin answered with three runs in the fourth inning and added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings, leading the Panthers 5-3.
  • The Dragons went to the bullpen and the Panthers responded with a bang. Schirmer singled and scored on a two-run home run by Gavin Lawler, tying the game at five in the sixth inning.
  • A two-run homer by the Dragons in the seventh made it 7-5.
  • ODU was able to chip away with a run in the seventh inning. Mason Kurtz walked and swiped second base with two outs. Tristan Schuerman lined a RBI single to center field, getting the Panthers within one at 7-6.
  • Three more runs in the eighth inning put ODU ahead for good. Lawler doubled and advanced on an infield single by Chapman. Chapman stole his second base of the game. Wells dropped a two-run double inside the left field line, giving the Panthers a 8-7 lead. Mason Hess added an insurance run with a RBI single.
  • Lawler, Chapman and Hess had two hit games with Lawler, Chapman, Wells and Schirmer scored two runs each.
  • Jaxson Stried allowed three runs in four innings on four hits. Carson Willis and Jared Hoersten (W, 2-0) each allowed two runs in two innings of work. Andrew Holcomb (Sv, 2) earned his second save with a scoreless ninth inning.
Game 2 (Saturday - W, 12-4 in 7 innings)
  • For the second time on Saturday, ODU scored first - this time with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Lawler just missed a leadoff home run with a double off the left field wall. A wild pitch on a strikeout allowed Chapman to reach and moved Lawler to third base. A walk loaded the bases with no outs. A RBI fielder's choice by Garrett Roach scored Lawler and a throwing error scored Chapman later in the inning.
  • Tiffin trimmed the lead to 2-1 in the second inning with a RBI single.
  • One inning later, Roach drilled a two-run shot to left field for a 4-1 lead.
  • The Dragons used three runs in the fourth inning to tie the game but Jeremy Ramirez (W, 2-0) ended the frame with a bases loaded strikeout.
