Baseball Ready for Neutral Site Series with Fairmont State

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio Dominican baseball team will look to continue its strong start to the season during its four-game neutral site series with Fairmont State.

SETTING THE SCENE

  • The Panthers and Fighting Falcons will play a pair of 7-inning doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday, March 6 and 7.
  • The start time both days is set for 2 p.m., with all four games being played at Marietta College in Marietta, Ohio.
  • The host institution has a No Spectator Policy at this time. A plan is in place to have live stats and video available for each game and those links can be found above.

LAST TIME OUT

  • It was a successful start to the 2021 season for ODU, who went 4-0 last weekend with a pair of wins over Findlay and Notre Dame (OH).
  • The Panthers scored 35 runs over the four games played in Mason, Ohio at Prasco Park. ODU also tallied 35 hits, which is the highest total in the Great Midwest early on this spring.
  • ODU opened the weekend with a 5-1 win over Findlay in non-conference action. The Panthers came back the next day to top the Oiler 14-2 before besting NDC 6-5 and 10-5.

SWIPING BASES

  • The Panthers ran all weekend long in Mason, Ohio, stealing 22 bases over four games. The team's total is already among the top 10 nationally.  
  • ODU does lead the nation with 5.50 stolen bases per game.
  • Five players have three or more steals this season, led by four each from graduate senior Roger Danison (Carroll, Ohio), and sophomores Alex Brill (Amherst, Ohio) and David Silva (Tontogany, Ohio).

SILVA NAMED G-MAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK

  • Silva was chosen as the top performer from the opening week of play in the conference, as the G-MAC released its weekly honors on Tuesday, March 2.
  • Silva batted .500 (8-16), with nine RBI, four runs and four stolen bases. The sophomore hit the team's only home run through four games as well.
  • All of his statistical marks rank near the top of the G-MAC and he scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth during the 6-5 victory over Notre Dame.

POWER PITCHING

  • Even with 35 runs in four games, the headline for ODU's opening weekend could have been the pitching staff. As a unit, ODU produced a 1.50 ERA, which leads the G-MAC and ranks third nationally.
  • Sophomore Grayson Hamilton (Lebanon, Ohio) picked up where he left off last spring, tossing 7.0 innings, allowing one run on six hits against Findlay. Hamilton also has a team-best eight strikeouts.
  • Freshmen Scott Rouse (Hinckley, Ohio) and Derek Bolander (Oregon, Ohio) also made impressive collegiate debuts at Praso Park. Rouse went 6.2 innings in the season opener, conceding five hits and one run, while striking out seven.
  • Bolander earned the first two saves of his collegiate career, both coming against Notre Dame. The freshman has pitched 4.0 innings over two appearances, allowing two unearned runs and has four strikeouts.

ABOUT FAIRMONT STATE

  • Fairmont State will be opening its 2021 season this weekend in Marietta. FSU was 7-9 prior to the season being cancelled last spring.
  • The Fighting Falcons were picked second in the preseason coaches poll for the Mountain East Conference North Division. FSU was also receiving votes NCBWA Atlantic Region preseason rankings.
  • Ohio Dominican and Fairmont State met three times in 2018, with the Panthers going 2-1 in series. In ODU's two wins, they outscored the Falcons by a combined count of 39-8.
