About the Panthers:
Last week, the Panthers went 2-0 with wins over Urbana and Cedarville.
In the 3-0 victory against Urbana, two goals in the final minute and a half of play helped Ohio Dominican's women's soccer team secure a 3-0 victory in non-conference action.
The Panthers controlled the majority of the action on the pitch, holding an 18-6 advantage in shots and a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks, but had to survive several late run outs by Urbana before pulling away in the end.
Senior Jennifer Holton (Johnstown, Ohio) put the Panthers on the board early, scoring her 20th career goal off of a corner kick by sophomore Broegan Sautter (Bellville, Ohio) 10 minutes into action to give ODU the 1-0 lead. The score remained that way for the remainder of the half, with Urbana managing just two shots for the period.
The Panthers came out firing in the second half, squeezing out 12 shots in the frame, but had trouble earning separation. Urbana had several good scoring opportunities with a pair of shots in the 73rd and 74th minutes, with the first being blocked by ODU's defense and the second saved by sophomore Laura Clark (Lapeer, Mich.).
ODU kept its pressure up down the stretch, with sophomore Emily Spencer (Gibsonia, Pa.) scoring at the 88:35 mark on a through ball up the middle from Lauren Pratt (West Chester, Ohio) to make it 2-0. Less than a minute later, sophomore Jordan Mazzi (Galena, Ohio) hit the crossbar on her shot attempt, but Pratt was there to clean it up for the final tally of the game, her first collegiate goal.
In dramatic fashion, the Ohio Dominican's women's soccer team chipped in a goal in the last two seconds of double overtime to edge out the Yellow Jackets 2-1 in double overtime.
The Yellow Jackets jumped on the board early, scoring the first goal of the game four and a half minutes into the first period after Jacoby Ziegler connected with the back of the net for her first goal of the season.
With determination on their side, senior captain Jennifer Holton (Johnstown, Ohio) scored her second goal of the season and the game-tying goal after she headed the ball into the back of the net from a senior Shara Perry (Hilliard, Ohio) pass at the 57:02 mark.
At the end of the first overtime, the Panthers tried to seal the win in the 99th minute when senior Jessica D'Isidoro (Twinsburg, Ohio) missed high off a corner kick from sophomore Broegan Sautter (Bellville, Ohio).
With two seconds remaining in the second overtime, freshman Lauren Pratt (West Chester, Ohio) chipped in the game-winning goal from a cross from senior D'Isidoro, making it the second goal of the season for the young freshman.
Sophomore goalie Laura Clark (Lapeer, Mich.) grabbed six saves in the win, giving her 20 on the year and an overall record of 2-1.
About the Bulldogs:
Last Friday, an overtime goal from sophomore midfielder Stephanie Garland lifted the Ferris State University women's soccer team to a 3-2 extra decision win over Madonna in non-league play.
Garland notched her first goal of the 2012 campaign on a header off a corner kick at the 97:30 mark of the contest to help the Bulldogs pick up their first win of the season. Freshman defender Lindsey Scott was credited with the assist as FSU improved to 1-1-1 overall this year.
After a scoreless first half, the Bulldogs struck first at 50:48 when freshman Casey Shauman tallied her second goal of the season on a penalty kick.
However, Madonna responded less than two minutes later when Ashley Parent scored on a rebound header off the cross bar to knot the contest. The hosts grabbed a 2-1 advantage at 71:20 on an own goal by FSU, which occurred in heavy traffic in the box.
The Bulldogs tied up the game at the 78:50 mark when Nicole Boehnke scored her first of the season in unassisted fashion on a rebound shot. The 2-2 score held up thru the end of regulation, setting up the extra period.
About the Lakers:
Last week, the Lakers ended in a 0-0 draw in double overtime against No. 24 Minnesota State. Senior keeper Chelsea Parise became the program's career shutout leader. Parise tallied nine saves in her 46th career blank sheet to move ahead of former Laker Kristina Nasturzio who owns 45.5 shutouts.
The first half was evenly matched as the Mavericks held a slight 6-4 edge in shots. Minnesota State dominated the second half taking eight shots to the Lakers' two, but GVSU also had its control of the ball as it was able to take five corner kicks. In the overtime periods, the Lakers got off four shots while limiting the Mavericks to just one.
A lone goal was all the Grand Valley State women's soccer team needed to help Parise move into the top spot in the Division II record book in career shutouts with a 1-0 victory over visiting Ferris State on Wednesday evening at the GVSU Soccer Field.
Parise now holds the records for career shutouts with 47 in her four-year career. The senior keeper has only allowed 27 goals in 65 wins in that span.
The opening minutes saw an even control of the field as neither team could find a rhythm. Grand Valley State put the pressure on the Bulldogs, taking 10 shots and three corners in the first half.
In the 41st minute, Hilbert sent a long ball that found its way into the upper right 90, past a diving Ferris State keeper. The goal would turn out to be all the Lakers needed to secure the win.
The Bulldogs had their best chance with less than three minutes left in the first when Hillary Procunier sent a shot from the top of the 18-yard box, but it was Parise who came out to grab the ball for her lone save of the game.
The next 45 minutes was a back and forth game, with the GVSU defense shutting down the Bulldogs' scoring opportunities. Ferris State was able to hold the Lakers scoreless as well and only allowed one corner in the second stanza.
The Series:
The Panthers first met the Bulldogs on October 1, 2010 in Big Rapids, Michigan. The team rallied in the final minutes for their second straight come-from-behind road victory, defeating Ferris State, 2-1. In the second meeting in 2011, ODU battled light showers, frigid temperatures and high winds, to a 1-1 draw in double overtime at Panther Field on September 30.
Against the Lakers, the Panthers are 0-2 in the series. These two teams first met in the fall of 2010 where the Lakers jumped on the Panthers early, beating them 6-0 in Allendale, Michigan on October 3. Last season, ODU lost by just one goal, falling 1-0 at Panther Field on October 2.
