Box Score WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Ohio Dominican's pitching staff allowed 13 hits and walked 13 batters as the Panthers fell 13-5 to West Chester (Pa.) in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational Tuesday afternoon.
The loss snapped ODU's three game win streak as the Panthers fell to 5-3, while the Golden Rams remained perfect at 8-0.
ODU led 1-0 through four and a half innings, but West Chester scored all 13 of its runs in the fifth through eighth innings, including four tallies apiece in the seventh and eighth frames.
The Panthers scored the game's first run in the top of the first inning as freshman Marcus Schluessler (Zanesville, Ohio) walked, junior Ryan Rovnak (Poland, Ohio) singled him to third, and sophomore Bryan Rudolph (Pickerington, Ohio) drove him in with an RBI single. ODU would strand those two runners, however.
Freshman Cole Carpenter (Zanesville, Ohio), making his first collegiate start, walked four in the first inning but managed to keep West Chester off the scoreboard with a double play coming to his benefit. He danced out of trouble in the second as well, leaving two more Rams runners on base, stranding five runners in the first two innings.
The Panthers wouldn't get another hit until the top of the fifth, though, and a double play would end that inning. West Chester than scored three times in the bottom of that inning, twice in the sixth and four times in the seventh to grab a 9-1 lead.
ODU cut it to 9-5 in the top of the eighth, scoring all four runs with two outs. Redshirt-sophomore Christian Prince (Hudsonville, Mich.) and senior Billy Tecklenburg (Troy, Ohio) both had RBI doubles, and Tecklenburg would come in to score on his hit on a West Chester error.
The Rams would put the game away, though, answering with four runs in their half of the inning to go on top 13-5.
Carpenter allowed four hits and five walks but just the one earned run in his four-plus innings of work, while freshman Austin Monnin (Napoleon, Ohio) suffered the loss in relief.
Rovnak extended his hitting streak to six straight games while Rudolph has now hit in four straight for the Panthers.
ODU takes on Lock Haven at noon on Wednesday.
