COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio Dominican Panthers (6-9, 2-2 G-MAC) baseball team concluded a nine-game homestand with the opening of the conference slate as the Lake Erie Storm (3-15, 2-2 G-MAC) came to town.
Lake Erie and Ohio Dominican split the series with the Storm winning both Saturday (March 14) games by scores of 4-3 and 8-1. ODU managed a split with two wins on Sunday (March 15), 7-1 and 7-6.
Game 1 (Saturday - L, 4-3)
- With runs in each of the first two innings, Ohio Dominican started the series with a 2-0 lead. Sam Battles opened the scoring with a RBI single and Tryce Chaffin followed with his own RBI single in the second.
- The Storm took advantage of two hit batters and two walks with a run scored in the fifth inning, making it 2-1.
- Two errors by the Storm created a predicament in the bottom of the fifth inning. ODU had Gavin Lawler at first base and Chaffin at third following two errors by the shortstop. Lawler took off for second base, allowing Chaffin to later steal home in a delayed double steal.
- Lake Erie tied the game at three in the eighth inning with a two-run double.
- The Panthers loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth inning with two walks and a single but could not take the lead back.
- The Storm used a RBI double in the ninth inning, leading 4-3 and would take the series opener.
- Chaffin, Battles and Grant Horne each had two-hit games as Chaffin scored twice.
- Jaxson Stried pitched five innings of one run ball in his start, scattering one hit, three walks and two hit batters while getting five strikeouts. Jared Hoersten followed with two runs allowed in 2.2 innings while also fanning five batters. Andrew Holcomb (L, 0-1) took the loss with one run allowed in 1.1 innings pitched.
Game 2 (Saturday - L, 8-1 in 7 innings)
- The game was scoreless into the fourth inning with the first nine Storm batters retired in order by Steven Chapman.
- Lake Erie pounced for six runs in the fourth inning, taking a 6-0 lead.
- Lawler got the Panthers on the board with his third home run of the season in the fourth inning, a solo shot to left field.
- The Storm scored a run in the fifth and seventh innings on ODU errors, making the score 7-1.
- Lawler's blast and a double by Noah Schacht were the only hits for the Panthers in the second game of the series.
- Chapman (L, 1-3) gave up six runs (four earned) in 3.2 innings with seven strikeouts. Jeremy Ramirez and Brody Mann combined for a scoreless frame with two strikeouts with Bryson Shumate surrendering two unearned runs in 2.1 innings.
Game 3 (Sunday - W, 7-1 in 7 innings)
- A big inning pushed the Panthers to an early lead with four runs in the bottom of the first. Chapman singled and swiped second base. He moved to third base on a single by Battles and came home on an error by the left fielder. Lawler doubled to put two runners in scoring position. A pair of errors on the same play (SS and 3B) brought Battles and Lawler home, giving the Panthers a 3-0 lead. Mason Kurtz capped the inning with a RBI single to right field.
- Two more runs came home in the third inning on two hits. Battles was hit by a pitch as the leadoff batter. A walk and sacrifice bunt moved two runners into scoring position with one out. Back-to-back RBI singles by the Masons made it 6-0. Mason Hess singled home a run with Kurtz adding his own check swing infield single.
- Lake Erie scored a run in the fourth inning, breaking up the shutout.
- Two walks led to a RBI groundout by Will Marrero in the fifth inning as ODU led 7-1 which would be the final score.
- Kurtz had the lone two-hit game with a pair of RBI. Battles reached base with two hit by pitches and a single, scoring twice.
- Landon Ringhiser (W, 2-1) pitched a complete-game with one run given up on three hits and three walks.
Game 4 (Monday - W, 7-6)
- Lake Erie returned the favor with a big first inning with three runs scored before the Panthers came to bat.
- Horne hit his first career home run, a leadoff blast off the top of the left field fence, in the bottom of the first inning.
- ODU tied the game in the third inning with a two-run single by Jack Wells after two walks and a wild pitch. The game was knotted at three after three frames.
- Another three run frame by the Storm put them back on top 6-3 at the halfway point of the game.
- Wells led off the fifth inning with his first home run of his career, a solo blast to right field, trimming the lead to 6-4.
- The seventh inning saw the Panthers take the lead with another first home run. After singles by Kurtz and Marrero, Will Schirmer drilled a three-run shot to left center field, giving ODU a 7-6 lead.
- Lake Erie had a chance in the eighth inning, loading the bases with three walks. Andrew Mouch entered with two on and no outs, walking the first batter he faced. Mouch locked down and fanned the next batter before getting a double play to escape the jam with the Panthers leading 7-6.
- Wells had a three-hit game with three RBI while Horne added two hits and two runs scored.
- Colin Hennessey started with three runs (one earned) in three plus innings pitched. He struck out seven batters in his outing. Carson Willis and Nick Cody combined for three runs allowed in 1.2 innings of relief. Jeremy Ramirez (W, 1-0) got six of his seven outs via strikeout, kickstarting a 4.1 inning span of scoreless ball. Lawler walked two batters without retiring a batter but Mouch and Holcomb (Sv, 1) each tossing a scoreless inning.
The Panthers are slated to face Wayne State (Mich.) in a two-game series this week in Detroit (weather permitting).
