COLUMBUS, Ohio- Coming off of a three game win streak, the Ohio Dominican women's soccer team makes the long journey this Friday, Oct.12 and Sunday, Oct. 14 to the Upper Peninsula to face Northern Michigan (3-8-0) and Michigan Tech (9-2-0).
About the Panthers:
Freshman Lauren Pratt (West Chester, Ohio) was the standout performer this past week. Pratt scored one goal in the past three games for the Panthers, granting her the GLIAC Player of the Week award. Lauren is the first women's soccer player to receive this award in the programs history.
Other notable performances came from sophomore Jordan Mazzi (Galena, Ohio) and senior Jennifer Horton (Johnstown, Ohio). Mazzi had a goal in two of the Panther victories against Walsh and Malone. Horton added a 20-yard screaming goal in the Walsh matchup.
In the last two games, the Panthers have held their opponents to just 11 shots over the course of two games. Against Malone, the Pioneers were held to five shots, including two on goal.
About the Wildcats:
The Wildcats are 2-5-0 in conference play this season and are currently trying to edge away from the current ranking of 12th in the GLIAC with a win against the Panthers.
Having 18 underclassmen on the roster this year, the Wildcats have struggled to get wins in both the GLIAC and nonconference play. Last week Northern Michigan recorded two losses in GLIAC action against Northwood and Saginaw Valley. The two GLIAC victories for the Wildcats came from a shutout against Findlay and a 2-1 decision against Lake Erie.
Last week, the Wildcats dropped a 2-1 decision to Northwood University at the Midland Soccer Complex on Friday.
NMU freshman Gabriella Garza scored the Wildcat goal in the 61st minute to cut the Timberwolves lead down to one. The unassisted goal was her second of the season.
It was a scoreless first half before Northwood jumped on the board less than two minutes into the second 45 minutes of play. Alyssa Tomassi scored her first of the game at 46:15 from Amanda Watson. Just under two minutes later, Tomassi earned her second goal with the assist going to Jessica Langer, putting the Timberwolves up 2-0.
In their second loss of the weekend, Saginaw Valley State shutout the Wildcats 5-0 in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest.
SVSU scored two goals in the first half and three in the second. Annie Aubrey had a header in the 27th minute for the first goal. Thirteen minutes later, Olivia Perrin scored.
Seven minutes into the second half, Shelby Wright gave the Cardinals a 3-0 lead. Bailey Wysocki scored in the 68th minute and Kelsey Burt added the fifth goal in the 72nd minute.
About the Series:
The Wildcats have had success against the Panthers, holding a 2-0 lead in the series. When these two teams first met in 2010, the Wildcats walked away with a 1-0 victory on their home field and again in 2011 when NMU topped the Panthers on Panther Field 1-0.
