About the Panthers:
The Panthers went 1-0-1 at home this past week, knocking off its second ranked opponent, No. 22 Northwood (Mich.), 2-1 in double OT on Tuesday, before falling to Charleston (W. Va.) 2-1 in a non-conference affair on Friday evening.
The Timberwolves took the lead late in the first half, but junior Colby Catlett (Hilliard, OH) found the equalizer at the 65:18 mark and later assisted with junior Andrew Edler (Hilliard, OH) on Justin Wheeler's (Jr./Gahanna, OH) game-winner in the second OT. It was the fourth OT of the year for ODU, just one shy of tying the school record, and first overtime win this season after going 0-2-1 in the first three.
In Friday's action, senior Felix Darko (Reynoldsburg, OH) matched Catlett with his co-team-leading fourth score in the 33rd minute to tie the game at 1-1, but the Golden Eagles put together a breakaway score midway through the second stanza to hand the Panthers their first loss in regulation on the year. Darko's score moved him into sixth on ODU's career goals list and one point shy of fifth place on the career points chart.
About the Cardinals:
The Cardinals, amidst a three-game, five-day stretch, are currently tied for second with ODU in the GLIAC standings, after going 1-0-1 last week, tying Lake Erie 1-1 in two overtimes on Friday and defeating Ashland 2-1 on Sunday. Zack Walega and Laurence Paterson are both tied for the team lead with three scores. Nine players have tallied a goal this year for the Cardinals, while 14 players have recorded points.
About the Timberwolves:
After dropping its first game of the year to ODU, Northwood rebounded to go 1-0-1 last week, defeating Ashland 3-0 and tying Lake Erie 1-1 in double overtime to keep its spot at the top of the GLIAC standings. Senior forward Keith Lough leads the Timberwolves in goals (5), assists (3) and points (13), while ranking in the top three in the conference in each.
The Series:
The Panthers and Cardinals have squared off three times prior to Tuesday's meeting with ODU holding a 2-0-1 edge in the overall series. After a scoreless draw in 2009, the Panthers shut out SVSU twice last season, outscoring the Cardinals 1-0 on the road and 2-0 at home. With its upset of previous No. 22 Northwood last Tuesday, ODU improved to 4-0-0 all-time against the Timberwolves, dating back to their first meeting in 2009.
