Lightning Strikes Twice for Panthers

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio Dominican men's basketball team capped off an exciting Wednesday evening in Alumni Hall with a 68-67 come from behind victory over the visiting Marauders of Central State University. The Panthers found themselves down 67-65 after a long CSU jumper with 11.9 ticks left on the clock. After a timeout, ODU got the ball in the hands of the team's top three pointer shooter John Trew, who drilled a trey with 0.6 seconds left to give the Panthers the much needed win and avenge an earlier season 83-56 loss to the Marauders.

The buzzer beater was the Panthers second of the night as the women's team defeated Urbana University with an amazing four-point player by freshman Tenia Scarver to defeat the Blue Knights, 55-54.

The Panthers (8-13) got out to an early 10-6 lead with 15:54 remaining in the first half, but CSU responded with a 17-4 run to take a 23-14 lead at the 7:27 mark. ODU closed the half on an 18-10 run of their own and entered the break down one, 33-32.

Both offenses came alive in the second half as each team traded baskets early. The Panthers shot 65.2 percent from the field, but could not even the score as the Marauders connected on 53.8 percent of their shots in the second stanza. ODU hung tough as Trew (So./Barberton, OH; pictured) began to heat up from behind the arc. Trew hit two three's late in the half, but it was his three free throws with 40.0 seconds left that knotted the game at 65-65 and help set up his late game heroics. His game-winning three pointer gave him a career high 22 points, 16 coming in the second stanza. His game high 10 rebounds also gave him his first double-double of the season.

Zak Kapron (So./Malvern, OH) finished with 14 points for the Panthers. Leading the way for CSU was Cole Prophet and Anthony Passley with 19 and 17, respectively. Gino Smith also added 11 as the Marauders fell to 16-4.

The men will return to action on Saturday, January 30th as they travel to Painesville, Ohio for an afternoon showdown with future GLIAC foe Lake Erie College. The Panthers and Storm are scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
