Box Score 3 COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio Dominican Panthers (21-28, 15-16 G-MAC) baseball team battled Mother Nature in the final series of the regular season as they hosted the Kentucky Wesleyan Panthers (21-26, 13-16 G-MAC) at Frank Damian Field.
Weather shortened the Thursday (May 1) doubleheader by postponing the second game after ODU won the opener 7-3. Friday (May 2) saw the Panthers win Senior Day game one 2-1 and led 12-7 in the second game before weather halted play in the top of the seventh.
**UPDATE** - Due to the forecast on Monday (May 5), the suspended game will be not resumed and is deemed final. The final game of the series will be canceled and not made up.
Game 1 - Thursday (W, 7-3)
- Kentucky Wesleyan wasted little time to take the lead in the series opener as they blasted a solo home run with the second batter of the game.
- ODU answered back in the bottom half of the first, tying the game at one. Jacob Adams walked and got to second on a passed ball. After a bunt single by Peter Jelenic to get Adams to third base, Drew Emerson drove in a run with a fielder's choice.
- Ohio Dominican took the lead one inning later in a similar fashion. Noah Schacht led off with a hit by pitch. A wild pitch moved him to second base and a walk from Jake Scherette put two runners on base. A sacrifice bunt got both runners over for a sacrifice fly by Adams and a 2-1 ODU lead.
- Two runs scored for the Black and Gold in the fourth inning, opening the lead to 4-1. Scherette singled and got to third on an error when Jordan Daniels tried to sacrifice him over. Adams singled home Scherette before another sacrifice bunt by Jelenic. Emerson singled Daniels home as the lead grew to three runs.
- KWC went to the bullpen and the Panthers jumped on the new reliever for three runs. Mason Kurtz doubled as the leadoff batter with Schacht getting hit with another pitch. Another error on a sacrifice plated Kurtz and put two more runners in scoring position. Daniels scored a run on a sacrifice fly and then a wild pitch scored the third run of the frame. ODU led 7-1 after five innings.
- The Purple Panthers added runs in the sixth and ninth innings, falling 7-3.
- Gianni Passarelli led the Panthers with two hits while Scherette and Schacht each scored twice.
- Landon Ringhiser got his third win of the season with 6.1 innings of two-run ball. He scattered five walks and five hits with six strikeouts. Chase Hunt allowed one run in 2.2 innings of relief.
Game 2 - Thursday (Postponed)
- Due to extended weather delays after the first game's conclusion, the second game on Thursday was postponed to a potential Monday date. Due to the extended weather forecast, this game was eventually canceled.
Game 3 - Friday (W, 2-1 in 7 innings)
- Ohio Dominican scored first in the 2nd inning with two hits. CJ Dean singled to start the inning. A sacrifice bunt moved him to second and a fly out got him to third base. Scherette singled Dean home as ODU struck first.
- Kentucky Wesleyan tied the game in the top of the sixth inning.
- In the next half inning, ODU took the lead. Emerson singled for the lead-off batter. Another error on a sacrifice bunt put a second runner on base. Two batters later, Sam Battles broke the 1-1 tie with a RBI single to right center field.
- Six different players had hits in the game with Adams having the lone extra-base hit.
- Steven Chapman notched his fourth complete game of the year as he limited the Panthers to one unearned run on four hits. He had eight punch outs to pick up his fifth win of the season.
Game 4 - Friday (W, 12-7 in 7 innings)
- A high-scoring first inning featured seven runs total. Kentucky Wesleyan plated three runs before ODU came to the plate. Eight men went to the plate for a four-run first inning on the ODU side. A lead-off walk by Adams came around to score on a RBI double by Emerson. After a double by Passarelli, Dean drilled a three-run home run to send the ODU Day crowd into a frenzy as they led 4-3.
- KWC answered back in the second inning with a two-run homer, retaking the 5-4 lead. As was a problem through the first few games, the bunt came back to haunt the Panthers. Daniels singled to open the frame and a wild pitch got him into scoring position. An error on a sac bunt from Jelenic scored Daniels. Dean broke the 5-5 tie with a RBI single in the second.
- A wild pitch after an error in the third tied the game at six all.
- Kurtz gave the ODU Panthers a 7-6 lead on a RBI single in the fourth inning.
- Another ODU wild pitch in the 5th frame knotted the game at 7-7.
- Daniels walked and swiped second base in the ODU fifth, coming home on a RBI single by Adams to the shortstop. Emerson doubled in Adams for a 9-7 lead.
- Three more runs came home in the 6th inning. A leadoff single and walk scored on respective base hits by Scherette (RBI single) and Daniels (RBI double). Scherette scored on a foul out sacrifice fly by Adams. The lead grew to 12-7 after six innings.
- The leadoff batter reached in the KWC seventh inning before the game went into a lightning delay of 1:41 minutes. The game was suspended pending the resumption of the series. It was later called an official game.
- Dean had three hits and four RBI in the game with two hit games by Daniels and Emerson.
- Four different players scored twice for Ohio Dominican.
- Jaxson Stried started and gave up seven runs in five innings. He got the win with the large run support. He fanned seven batters. Andrew Mouch got his fourth save of the season with a scoreless inning of work despite three hits allowed.
The Panthers have qualified for the 2025 G-MAC Tournament at Prasco Park in Mason, Ohio. Play will begin on Wednesday (May 7).
