Box Score 2 ASHLAND, Ohio - The Ohio Dominican Panthers baseball team concluded the series with the Ashland Eagles on Monday (April 3) afternoon.
Ohio Dominican fell in the first game 16-5 but rallied back for a split with a 10-1 win in the series finale.
GAME ONE
Jordan Daniels (Blacklick, Ohio) kicked things off with a bang with a leadoff home run, hitting his third home run of the season and second to leadoff the game.
Ashland bounced back with two runs in the first and second inning, taking a 4-1 lead after two frames.
The Panthers rallied to tie the game at four in the fourth inning with three runs crossing the plate. Devan Nail (Elyria, Ohio) and Mason Kurtz (Ostrander, Ohio) both singled to start the inning. Jake Scherette (Brunswick, Ohio) doubled home Nail with Brennen Hunt (Ashland, Ohio) continuing the trend with a sacrifice fly to center field. Daniels tied the game with a RBI single. Lane Marshall (Wooster, Ohio) added a single and got into scoring position but was stranded with the game knotted at four.
Over the final three innings, Ashland scored 12 runs.
In the sixth inning, ODU finished their scoring with two outs. Kurtz singled and Hunt doubled him into scoring position. Matthew Bame (Westerville, Ohio) entered as a pinch hitter and scored Kurtz on a RBI groundout.
Kurtz earned his second three-hit contest of the season with two runs scored. Daniels tallied two hits and two runs batted in. All nine starters had a hit in the game as ODU got 12 base knocks.
GAME TWO
After big innings doomed the Panthers in the first game, ODU returned the favor in the second game. The Panthers put up one inning of five runs with two frames of two runs.
Count the third inning as the five-run frame. Spencer Tammaro (New Albany, Ohio) started the inning with a solo home run to right center. Hunt singled on a bunt and stole second base. David Silva (Tontogany, Ohio) singled to center field, bringing home Hunt. A passed ball and balk put Silva to third base. Marshall got Silva to home plate with a RBI single. Nail added a RBI single and Michael Knapp (Elyria, Ohio) capped the inning with a sacrifice fly. ODU led 5-0 with more to come.
One inning later, Hunt singled and Silva walked with one out. A double steal led to a run as the throw from the catcher ended up in left field, scoring Hunt. Marshall pushed the lead to 7-0 with a RBI single - his second of the game.
For the second straight day, Jack Mathey (Copley, Ohio) delivered a home run for ODU. He blasted a two-run jack to left field for his fifth round-tripper of the season.
Ashland got on the board in the bottom of the seventh but the Panthers responded with an eighth-inning run. Silva doubled to commence the inning while Marshall singled for his third hit. Mathey made the score 10-1 with a sacrifice fly.
With 15 hits in the game, six players had multi-hit games. Marshall went for three hits with two runs and a pair of RBI. Silva reached base three times with a trio of runs scored. Mathey drove in three runs with two hits. Nail, Tammaro and Hunt each had two hits. Hunt scored two runs and swiped two bases.
Billy Criblez (Mantua, Ohio) made the start with six innings of one-run ball. He earned the win to go to 3-0 with two walks and one strikeout. Myles Martinez (Columbus, Ohio) tossed three scoreless innings for his league-leading sixth save of the season.
Ohio Dominican will host California (Pa.) on Wednesday (April 5) in a single game at 1:00 PM in Panther Valley.
