Extra Inning Heroics Seal Sweep For Ohio Dominican Over The Storm

MENTOR, Ohio – On Sunday afternoon, the Ohio Dominican softball team traveled to Mentor High School to play Lake Erie College for a doubleheader. The Panthers improved to 18-13 overall and 6-0 in the G-MAC with two wins over the Storm.

With three hits on the day, Kendrick Sterling (Crothersville, Ind.) led Ohio Dominican, recording a double and an RBI. Alli Madden (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Braxton Downs (Louisville, Ky.) were the other two Panthers with multiple hits on the day, each with two.

In the circle, freshman Marlee Jacobs (Plain City, Ohio) recorded her fifth shutout of the day in the first game. Jacobs came in to pitch 4.0 innings in the second game, picking up another win. The Plain City native had 12 strikeouts on the day with eight coming in the shutout, tying her career high.

Game One

In a pitcher's duel, Jacobs picked up her first two strikeouts in the first inning. Sterling then collected the first hit in the top of the second frame with a double.

The Storm answered in the bottom of the fifth with their second hit, a triple from Gonzales. The game remained scoreless heading into the seventh inning.

In the top of the seventh frame, Downs opened with a leadoff double. Makaila Moses (Lancaster, Ohio) came in to pinch hit, snagging an RBI triple to score Downs, giving ODU a 1-0 lead. Lake Erie had no answer in their final at-bat.

Game Two

 Another battle in the circle occurred as one hit was recorded between the two teams in the first four innings. The Storm answered first in the bottom of the sixth inning after stringing together three hits, taking a 1-0 lead.

In the top of the seventh, Madden netted a leadoff single. With two outs, Sterling came to the plate and hit an RBI single, tying it at 1-all. A scoreless eighth gave ODU momentum going into the top of the ninth.

Junior Alexis Stevens (Marion, Ohio) single through the left side. With the go-ahead run on base, Downs ripped a double to left field, scoring Stevens to take a 2-1 lead. ODU retired the Storm batters in order to seal the sweep.

Up Next

The Black and Gold remain on the road tomorrow with Ursuline College. The Arrows and the Panthers are set for a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 PM at Ursuline Softball Field.
