Ohio Dominican Hosts Malone to Open Conference Play

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio Dominican Panthers baseball team will open the 2023 Great Midwest schedule this weekend in Panther Valley against the Malone Pioneers. 

The series is scheduled to be played on Thursday (March 16) and Saturday (March 18) but the series could be shifted further due to weather. Thursday's doubleheader is scheduled for 1:00 PM.  

PANTHER NOTES

  • The Panthers completed a 3-1 weekend in Chillicothe last weekend against conference foe Northwood but in a non-conference capacity. 
    • Friday saw the Panthers and Timberwolves split the series. ODU won the series opener 4-3 before Northwood took the nightcap 4-1. 
    • Saturday proved to be a great day to be a Panther as they swept the doubleheader with scores of 2-1 and 8-2. 
  • Overall, Ohio Dominican is 6-8 for the season entering the first weekend of conference play. 
  • The Black and Gold hit .287 as a team against Northwood and sit with a .234 batting average in 14 games. 
  • David Silva (Tontogany, Ohio) and Brennen Hunt (Ashland, Ohio) hit .500 for the weekend for ODU while each hitting a home run. Silva tallied a six-for-12 slate with three runs scored, four runs driven in and five stolen bases. Hunt had four hits in eight at-bats with two runs and a pair of stolen bases. 
    • Silva leads the team with 12 steals (2nd in G-MAC), tied for the team lead in runs (eight) and is second in hits (13). He is on a four-game hitting streak. 
  • Jack Mathey (Copley, Ohio) had three doubles in the series, giving him six doubles for the season. Mathey leads the Panthers with a .372 batting average and eight runs scored (tied with Silva). He has reached base in all 14 games. 
    • He ranks eighth in the G-MAC in average 
  • Alex Brill (Amherst, Ohio) has driven in a team-high eight runs. He closed out the 2-1 win on Saturday for his first save of the season. He has compiled seven walks, three doubles and seven runs scored. 
  • Michael Knapp (Elyria, Ohio) and Jordan Daniels (Blacklick, Ohio) are tied with eight walks this season. 
  • The pitching staff allowed ten runs in 27 innings against Northwood. 
  • Myles Martinez (Columbus, Ohio) appeared in 2.2 scoreless innings, fanning five. He has given up two runs (one earned) in 12 innings this season. 
  • Marshall Flynn (Heath, Ohio) twirled five innings of one-run ball against Northwood. 
  • Max Whitesell (Dayton, Ohio) pitched a complete game with two runs allowed. He and Derek Bolander (Oregon, Ohio) are tied for the team lead with 19 strikeouts. 

ABOUT THE PIONEERS

  • Malone is 9-5 overall after a 5-3 trip to Tucson, Arizona last week. The Pioneers defeated Concordia-St. Paul (twice), Walsh, Adams State and Southwest Minnesota State while being defeated by Concordia-St. Paul, Bemidji State and Southwest Minnesota State. 
  • Tyson Gingerich is leading the team with a .500 average, 20 runs scored, 26 hits, five doubles, 14 walks and 17 stolen bases. 
  • Anthony Ryan is hitting .404 while tallying 15 hits, 21 hits and 16 RBI. 
  • Mitch Maurer and Clayton Criss were the reigning G-MAC North Division Pitcher and Player of the Week. Maurer pitched eight innings with two runs allowed against Concordia-St. Paul. Criss was seven-of-12 in Arizona and is batting .440 for the season. 

After the Malone series, Ohio Dominican will travel to Toledo to take on Saginaw Valley on Tuesday (March 21).
