Box Score COLUMBUS, Ga. – The Ohio Dominican softball team wrapped up the NFCA Division II Leadoff Classic on Sunday afternoon with a game against Carson-Newman. The Eagles defeated the Panthers, 4-2.
At the plate, senior Braxton Downs (Louisville, Ky.) had the best day going 3-3 with three singles. Fellow infielder Alexis Stevens (Marion, Ohio) followed going 2-3 and accounting for both of the Panthers' runs. Liana Morreale (Gibsonia, Pa.) collected the only RBI off a double in the top of the sixth inning.
On the mound, Marlee Jacobs (Plain City, Ohio) collected her fifth start of the season. The freshman pitched 6.0 innings and struck out four Eagles.
How It Happened
The Black and Gold struck first in the top of the opening inning with three consecutive singles from Stevens, Downs, and Olivia Congleton (Crothersville, Ind.). The Eagles answered in the bottom of the second inning after notching three hits and a hit-by-pitch to grab a 2-1 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth frame, Carson-Newman adds two more runs to grow their lead to 4-1 over Ohio Dominican. In the next inning, the Panthers registered three hits, including a double from Morreale, to cut their deficit to two, making it 4-2. With no more rallies left, ODU fell to CNU 4-2 on the final day.
All-Tournament Team
Kaleigh Golden (Thornville, Ohio) was named to the All-Tournament team by the coaches. Golden went 7-17 from the plate, tallying a .412 batting average. The sophomore had a triple and led the team with six RBIs over the weekend.
