Box Score 2 COLUMBUS, Ga. – The Ohio Dominican softball team sweep on the second day of the NFCA Division II Leadoff Classic. The Panthers defeated Gannon, 2-1 and Bridgeport, 4-3.
Sophomore Kaleigh Golden (Thornville, Ohio) went 4-7 from the plate with a triple and four RBIs. The Black and Gold collected 10 hits against Gannon with both Alli Madden (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Braxton Downs (Louisville, Ky.) having two apiece.
On the mound, Marlee Jacobs (Plain City, Ohio) collected her third win after pitching a complete game and striking out a personal best of seven batters. In the second game, freshman Samantha Schaefer (Louisville, Ky.) started on the rubber and retired four in her three innings. Senior Addison Smodilla (Terre Haute, Ind.) finished the game and collected her first win of the season.
Game One
The Panthers opened the scoring in the top of the second frame with a double from McKenna Conley (Mt. Orab, Ohio) and a single from Golden. ODU went ahead 2-0. Downs collected a single in the top of the fifth but ultimately was stranded on the bases. The Knights cut their deficit in half in the bottom of the fifth frame.
Golden notched another hit in the top of the sixth before the Black and Gold help Gannon in the bottom of the seventh. ODU defeated GU 2-1 to begin the day.
Game Two
Bridgeport struck first in the top of the third scoring two off of one hit and two errors by the Panther defense. Ohio Dominican responded in the bottom of the frame with three runs, taking a 3-2 lead.
The Purple Knights retaliated with back-to-back hits in the top of the next inning to tie the game at 3-all. In the bottom of the fourth, Smodilla doubled to start off but was stranded at third. in the bottom of the next inning, Golden hit a triple to score Gracie Jo Thompson (Ashville, Ohio). Ohio Dominican retook the lead, 4-3.
Despite two hits in the top of the final inning from UB, the Black and Gold defense remained strong and took the win.
