COLUMBUS, Ohio - After two road games over the weekend, the Ohio Dominican Panthers men's basketball team will host the Central State Marauders and Kent State Tuscarawas Golden Eagles in Alumni Hall this week. The Panthers are in the midst of a three game non-conference slate before the Holiday break.
Central State is on the schedule for 5:00 PM on Wednesday (Dec. 13) while Kent State Tuscarawas is set for 6:00 PM on Friday (Dec. 15) evening.
OPENING TIPOFF
- On Saturday, ODU fell 75-61 to Tiffin before facing the Bowling Green Falcons on Sunday in an exhibition. The Panthers were defeated 97-49 by the Falcons. Ohio Dominican's record sits at 1-6 overall and 0-3 in the G-MAC.
- Sean McKitrick (Dayton, Ohio) led the Panthers with 18 points at Tiffin, the third time he has led the team in scoring. In his first seven games at ODU, he is averaging 12.9 points per game (2nd on the team) with 12 three pointers made - a team high.
- JeJuan Weatherspoon (Columbus, Ohio) paces the team in scoring, rebounding and blocks. He is scoring 16.9 points per game with 10.4 rebounds. His rebounding totals lead the G-MAC along with his 7.9 defensive rebounds per game. In D2, he is 5th in defensive rebounds per game and 13th in rebounds per game.
- After 12 points at Tiffin, Luke Ruth (Grove City, Ohio) has four games in double-figures with a season average of 11.4 points and 3.6 assists per game. He is seventh in the G-MAC for assists.
- Parker Swartz (Grand Rapids, Michigan) set a career-high with 15 points at Tiffin along with three assists, three steals and two blocks - more career bests.
- Caleb Brooks (Florence, Kentucky) is ODU's fourth player in double figures for the season at 12.5 points while having a team-high .568 shooting and .500 from deep.
- The Panthers are starting a pair of brand new Division II era series this week as they will be playing Central State and Kent State Tuscarawas for the first time.
- In conference games only, Weatherspoon leads the league with 10.7 rebounds per game (8.7 defensive rebounds). Ruth is 1st in free throw % (10-10) and sixth in field goal % (.556). McKitrick is scoring a team-high 14.5 points per game.
- Ohio Dominican's defense in just G-MAC games sits in the top five of a number of categories. The Panthers are 1st in three point % defense (.297), 2nd in scoring defense (70.0 PPG) and fifth in field goal % defense (.432).
SCOUTING THE MARAUDERS
- Central State makes the trip to Columbus with an 1-9 record this season and a 0-4 record in the SIAC.
- To open the season, Central State dropped the first four games. Two of those losses came to Wilberforce (103-101 - OT) and Malone (80-73) - both common opponents for the Panthers.
- With a win over Carolina Christian (118-62) on Nov. 21, the Marauders have lost the last five games. Four of the five losses were within conference play and the latest loss was against another ODU common opponent - Kent State Tuscarawas (87-85).
- Four of the Central State games have been decided by one possession and six games have been within five points.
- Willie Jackson, in seven games so far, leads the Marauders in the categories of scoring, field goals and three pointers. Jackson averages 22.3 points per game with 53 field goals and 26 threes. He is ranked 2nd in the SIAC for scoring, 3rd in three pointers and fifth for field goal % (.530).
- Steven Key II is second on the team in scoring with 13.7 points per game. Key is shooting .495 (45-91) from the floor and .815 (44-54) from the free throw line (9th in the SIAC).
- Zavian Jackson averages 12.1 points per game and is leading the team with 2.3 assists and 1.0 steals per game.
- Raevon Thomas holds a stat line of 7.6 points, 7.4 assists and 1.5 blocks per game. Thomas is seventh in the conference with rebounds.
- Central State scores 78.6 points per game while allowing 78.4 points, ranking 4th and 12th in the SIAC, respectively. The Marauders shoot .492 from the floor and .381 from deep with the defense allowing teams to shoot .457 overall and .390 from three. On offense, Central State is 1st in three point % and second in field goal % with the defense ranking 11th in field goal % and 14th on threes.
- The Marauders total 36.2 rebounds per game as the fifth best rebounding team in the league.
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN EAGLES
- Kent State Tuscarawas is 7-3 through this week, including a four-game winning streak.
- They are ranked tenth in the USCAA D2 Coaches Poll
- The Golden Eagles opened the season with three straight wins (four including an 80-70 exhibition win over NCAA D3 Geneva), including a 69-64 win over NAIA Ohio Christian.
- The next three games were losses for the Golden Eagles, all to teams outside of the USCAA. After a loss to NAIA Lindsey Wilson (85-69), Kent State Tuscarawas fell to D2 and G-MAC members Thomas More (92-46) and Ashland (98-76).
- The current four-game winning streak has seen three lopsided USCAA wins and an upset win over NCAA D2 Central State, 87-85.
Kameron Shockley leads the team with 19.3 points (11th in USCAA D2), 10.3 rebounds (7th in USCAA D2), 4.0 assists, 3.4 steals (3rd in USCAA D2) and 1.6 blocks (9th in USCAA D2) per game. He is shooting .545 from the floor.
- Kyle Shockley is 2nd on the squad with 15.9 points and 3.8 assists per game.
- Braden Rostad (8.7 PPG), Ethan Bower (8.5 PPG) and Mekhi Johnson (8.4 PPG) all add to the scoring for the Golden Eagles.
- Vincent Roper added 4.0 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 3.0 steals per game.
- Kent State Tuscarawas is scoring 83.0 points while allowing 77.4 points per game. They are shooting 44.6% from the floor with 30.8% from deep. On defense, teams are making 42.9% of their shots and 26.5% on three pointers.
