Football Welcomes Cavaliers for Homecoming Week Tilt

COLUMBUS, Ohio - After two weeks away from the Great Midwest schedule, the Ohio Dominican Panthers football team welcomes G-MAC foe Walsh University to Panther Stadium for a Homecoming tilt on Saturday (Oct. 1) at 1:00 PM. The Panthers and Cavaliers will battle on Homecoming for the second straight year. 

GAME DAY INFORMATION

OPENING KICKOFF

  • The Panthers battled the #16/24 Indianapolis Greyhounds last week, falling 44-38 in a shootout that saw the game come down to the final minutes. ODU erased a 28-7 lead over the course of the second quarter and most of the third quarter. The Panthers took the brief lead with 2:42 to go but UIndy rallied with 16 ticks left for the win. 
  • Jake Byrd (Fort Wayne, Indiana) threw for five touchdowns while compiling 481 yards passing. He was 28-of-45 for the day.
  • Andrew Wolf (Ashland, Ohio) caught 12 passes for ODU's first 200-yard receiving game in program history. Wolf caught 12 passes for 269 yards and four touchdowns. 
  • Ty Wiley (Pickerington, Ohio)caught four passes for 109 yards and one touchdown, a 90-yard strike. 
  • Byrd and Wolf connected on a program record 96-yard TD pass in the 3rd quarter.
  • Jayden Hill (Gahanna, Ohio) led the Panthers with ten tackles.
  • ODU scored 38 points vs. UIndy, most in a loss since scoring 41 vs. Grand Valley in 2012. 
  • Walsh enters the contest 0-4 overall and 0-2 in conference play. The Cavaliers have dropped 17 of the last 20 games, dating back to the Spring 2021 season.

  • Ohio Dominican is 9th in the nation for passing offense among Division II schools, averaging 303.8 passing yards per game.

  • 5 - Jake Byrd threw five touchdown passes in Week 4, including four to Andrew Wolf

WALSH AT A GLANCE

  • Walsh enters play Saturday with an 0-4 record overall and 0-2 mark in the Great Midwest. 
  • The Cavaliers fell 46-10 to McKendree last week on the road. Walsh started the scoring with a five-yard touchdown run from Dom Jennings before McKendree scored 46 straight points. Charles Hanchett ended the game with a 41-yard field goal, making the final score 46-10. 
  • Tom Vatter completed 19-of-27 passes for 165 yards and two interceptions against the Bearcats before Ceejay Yarboro completed three of four passes. 
  • Tai Carter rushed for a team-high 91 yards on 16 carries while Garrett Waite had five catches for 58 yards.
  • Stephen Baugh led the Cavaliers defense with six tackles. 
  • Overall, McKendree put 472 yards of total offense to Walsh's 304, behind 390 yards passing. 
  • For the season, Walsh averages ten points scored, 101.3 rushing yards, and 189.3 passing yards per game on offense. The Cavaliers are allowing 37.8 points, 151.0 rushing yards and 257.5 passing yards per contest. 
  • Walsh is under the direction of head coach John Fankhauser in his fifth season as head coach. Walsh is 10-31 under Fankhauser and 8-21 in G-MAC since his first year in 2018. 
  • In the 2022 G-MAC Preseason Poll, Walsh was selected for an eighth-place tie with Lake Erie, earning eight votes each. The Cavaliers were 2-9 in 2021 with a 1-6 G-MAC mark.  
  • Tom Vatter has thrown for 756 yards on 77-of-128 passing with eight interceptions and no touchdowns. 
  • Tai Carter leads the Cavaliers rushing attack with 208 yards rushing on 58 attempts and one touchdown. Dom Jennings has a team-high two touchdowns on the ground as the second leading rusher (130 yards). 
  • Tyre Gray returns to the Cavaliers and has a team-high 16 catches for 154 yards. Keyshawn Johnson has 13 catches for 116 yards while Garrett Waite and Kharion Davis each have ten total catches. 
  • Javon Colston has two of Walsh's three interceptions while Cam Hollobaugh sports the third one. 
  • Charles Hanchett leads the team in scoring with 16 points, coming off four field goals and four extra points. His longest field goal is 41 yards, coming in Week 4.
  • Nolan Johnson is the leader in all-purpose yards with 334, including a team-high 264 kick return yards. 
  • Stephen Baugh has 24 tackles and is the co-leader in tackles for loss (4.5) with Marcus Shellenbarger. Diego Bremer has 23 tackles with Shellenbarger adding 17 for the season and two sacks (team-high).
