Box Score COLUMBUS, Ohio -- If you like scoring and lots of offense, the crossover matchup between the Ohio Dominican Panthers and the #16 Indianapolis Greyhounds would have been more than enough on Saturday (Sept. 24) afternoon.
The Panthers and Greyhounds combined for 82 points and 1,033 yards of total offense as the Greyhounds outlasted the Panthers 44-38 at Panther Stadium. Ohio Dominican dropped to 2-2 as the conference slate begins again next week.
BOX SCORE NOTES
- Jake Byrd (Fort Wayne, Indiana) threw for a career-best and D2 season high 479 yards in the air with five touchdowns while completing 27-of-44 passes.
- Andrew Wolf (Ashland, Ohio) caught 12 passes for a career-high 278 yards and four touchdowns along with 127 yards after catch.
- Ty Wiley (Pickerington, Ohio) tallied four catches for 109 yards and one touchdown on the day.
- Kaiden Koch (Grafton, Ohio) was perfect from the field in kicking as he nailed all five extra points and a 22-yard field goal, totaling eight points.
- Jayden Hill (Gahanna, Ohio) made a game-high ten tackles, with Daishaun Hill (Rocky River, Ohio) and Michael Powers (West Mansfield, Ohio) making nine and eight tackles, respectively.
- Ohio Dominican was edged in the total offense category 517-516 despite the Panthers outpassing the Hounds 479-289.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- UIndy scored the first two touchdowns for a 14-0 lead 11 minutes into the game before Ohio Dominican came to life just seconds later.
- Byrd connected with Ty Wiley on a 90-yard touchdown pass that cut the lead in half with 3:30 left in the first quarter.
- The Hounds added back-to-back touchdowns as the lead grew to 28-7 with 11:28 left in the first half.
- Kaiden Koch tallied a 22-yard field goal midway through the second period, pulling the Panthers within 28-10.
- Just before the intermission, Byrd found Wolf for a 13-yard touchdown pass and ODU only trailed 28-17 at the break.
- On ODU's first drive of the second half, the drive started at the one and ended in paydirt. Byrd hit Wolf with a 96-yard touchdown pass and the Panthers were within four, 28-24 with 12 minutes left on the third quarter clock.
- After UIndy kicked a field goal to extend the lead to 31-24, Ohio Dominican wasted little time to strike again and tie the game, erasing a 21-point lead. The Byrd-Wolf connection went 56 yards as the game was knotted 31-all with 5:07 left in the third.
- Back-to-back field goals by the Hounds pushed the UIndy lead back to 37-31 with 2:42 left in the game.
- The Panthers had one more drive in them to take the lead. Wolf caught his fourth TD pass from Byrd, this time from eight yards and ODU took the lead 38-37 with 2:42 to go.
- UIndy drove down and won the game with 16 seconds left, holding on for a 44-38 shootout win.
RECORD UPDATE
- Jake Byrd sits third in program and G-MAC history with 479 passing yards in a game and has the highest total offense total in Division II (494 yards).
- Andrew Wolf broke the ODU receiving yards records in a game while gaining the second most yards in G-MAC history. Wolf leads Division II in single game yardage and is one of two Division II players with four touchdowns in a game (3rd 4 TD game in ODU history, fourth with four TD's or more).
- Byrd's 90-yard strike to Wiley was tied for the second longest pass in program history and 3rd longest in G-MAC history.
- When Byrd and Wolf went 96 yards later in the game, that broke the ODU and G-MAC record for longest pass.
- Byrd was the 12th player in ODU history with a five touchdown game.
