Box Score 2 COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio Dominican softball team returned to action on Sunday afternoon at Sunbury Road welcoming Lake Erie College as Great Midwest Athletic Conference play rolls on. The Black and Gold tallied seven unanswered runs and received complete games for the second consecutive series from Sydney Long (Ashland, Ohio) and Addison Smodilla (Terre Haute, Indiana).
GAME ONE
Long held Lake Erie hitless to collect her second career no-hitter and the first since March 19, 2019 when she threw seven scoreless innings against Cedarville University to aid the Black and Gold in securing a 6-0 victory. The Panther senior threw seven scoreless innings once more, allowing one walk and striking out three batters.
She spoke about the performance with Ralph Schudel following the contest.
ODU went to work scoring in the bottom of the first inning. Madison Shemwell (Owensboro, Kentucky) opened the game as she was issued a free pass. Shemwell stole second base and moved to third following a ground out.
Alexis Stevens (Marion, Ohio) brought her home with a bunt single that gave the Panthers a 1-0 lead. She would advance on a wild pitch to move her to third base and another wild pitch that allowed her to score to double the lead to 2-0.
An RBI single off the bat of Keirah Smetzer (Ashland, Ohio) drove in another runner to extend the lead to 3-0.
Erika Case (Holland, Ohio) homered in the bottom of the third inning to add an exclamation point and lift the Black and Gold to the 4-0 win.
GAME TWO
Following in Long's footsteps was Addison Smodilla and the Panther junior would not be outdone. She pitched seven scoreless innings allowing three hits and striking out three batters. ODU got on the board in an unconventional manner in the bottom of the fourth inning as Braxton Downs (Louisville, Kentucky) fouled out and was credited with a sacrifice fly that drove in a runner.
Smetzer once again collected an RBI single that gave the Black and Gold a 2-0 advantage.
Downs impacted the score once more as she homered to left-center field in the bottom of the sixth inning to carry the Panthers to the 3-0 victory.
