Downs Powers Panthers Past Trevecca For Saturday Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio Dominican softball team extended its winning streak to 12 games with a doubleheader sweep of Trevecca Nazarene on Saturday afternoon. The Black and Gold earned a 5-2 victory in game one and claimed an 8-0 victory in game two.

GAME ONE

Both teams were held scoreless in the opening inning, but the Panthers fired the opening salvo in the bottom of the second. Senior Erika Case (Holland, Ohio) earned a four-pitch walk to become the first Black and Gold baserunner of the inning. Sidney Jackson (Lewisburg, Ohio) pinch ran for Case and moved to second base following a walk.

Senior Keirah Smetzer (Ashland, Ohio) reached on a fielder's choice and plated Jackson to give the hosts a 1-0 lead. A double off the bat of centerfielder Alli Madden (Cincinnati, Ohio) scored two runners and gave the Black and Gold a 3-0 advantage.

ODU extended the lead to 4-0 when Braxton Downs (Louisville, Kentucky) struck for her eighth home run of the season.

Trevecca trimmed the lead to 4-2 in the top of the fourth but a home run from Madison Shemwell (Owensboro, Kentucky) gave the Panthers the insurance run needed to lift them to a 5-2 win.

GAME TWO

Neither team could find the scoresheet as each club was held scoreless through the first three innings. Sophomore Alexis Stevens (Marion, Ohio) singled through the left side to open the inning. Case followed with a single to right-center field which moved Stevens to second base. Downs struck again with an RBI double that plated one run. A single up the middle of the infield from Smetzer gave the Panthers a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning.

In the fifth inning Case singled through the left side to drive in Shemwell. Stevens scored another run, advancing on a wild pitch to swell the lead to 4-0. The Black and Gold added four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to claim an 8-0 win against the Trojans.

WINNING STREAK

With its victory, Ohio Dominican moves into a tie for sixth in the nation for the best winning streak with 12 consecutive wins.
