Box Score 2 CANTON, Ohio – The Ohio Dominican softball team continued its winning ways earning its fourth consecutive series sweep and running its overall winning streak to eight games scoring back-to-back victories over Malone University on Sunday afternoon.
GAME ONE
As has been the case so many times this season the Black and Gold wasted little time in scoring, collecting runs early in the contest. Madison Shemwell (Owensboro, Kentucky) opened the contest with a walk. She advanced to second base moments later. A single from Kaleigh Golden (Thornville, Ohio) singled to centerfield to move Shemwell to second base. The ODU freshman right fielder moved to second, collecting a stolen base.
A passed ball from the Pioneers allowed Shemwell to score and Golden followed her after an RBI single from Alexis Stevens (Marion, Ohio) drove in Golden. Marley McDonald (Dublin, Ohio) drove in the final run of the inning with a groundout to second base that plated Stevens to give the Black and Gold a 3-0 lead.
Malone struck for a run in the bottom of the first inning to cut the lead to two runs.
Clever baserunning from Shemwell allowed the visitors to reestablish their three-run advantage. An RBI single off the bat of Braxton Downs (Louisville, Kentucky) plated one run and gave the Panthers a 5-1 lead heading into the third inning.
ODU tallied four runs in the fifth inning to seal the contest. An RBI single from Alli Madden (Cincinnati, Ohio) gave the visitors a 6-1 advantage while a single from Golden swelled the lead to 7-1.
Shemwell scored on a wild pitch and an RBI double from Stevens lifted the Panthers to the 9-1 victory.
Senior Sydney Long (Ashland, Ohio) claimed her 10th victory of the season by going five solid innings, allowing two runs, and striking out five.
GAME TWO
Downs opened the series finale with a homerun that cruised over the centerfield wall to give the visitors an early 1-0 lead. The visitors doubled the lead in the third inning as Madden got on board with an infield single. She would come around to score following an error by the left fielder two batters later to double the lead to 2-0.
The Panther third basemen continued to terrorize the Pioneers as Downs cranked her second home run of the contest over the center-field wall to open the top of the fourth inning. An RBI single off the bat of Madden drove in Keirah Smetzer (Ashland, Ohio) added to the tally to grow the lead to 4-0.
Malone climbed back into the contest in the bottom of the fifth inning with a two-run home run to right field.
Addison Smodilla (Terre Haute, Indiana) and Olivia Rettke (Reynoldsburg, Ohio) combined to get the final eight outs and lead the Panthers to the 4-2 victory.
