Box Score 2 EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. -- The Ohio Dominican baseball team fell late in both halves of a road doubleheader Sunday at East Stroudsburg.
The Warriors walked off in Game Three of the series, 5-3, before claiming the finale in Game Four by a final count of 4-3. East Stroudsburg (15-2) runs its program record win streak to 14 games, while ODU falls below .500 this spring at 5-6.
GAME ONE
Despite five extra-base hits, and out hitting ESU 8-5 in the contest, ODU found itself in a 3-1 deficit through five innings of play. Brennen Hunt (Ashland, Ohio) led off the third inning with a single and stole two bases before scoring on a sac fly from Michael Knapp (Elyria, Ohio).
Lane Marshall (Wooster, Ohio) pitched the entire contest for ODU, his second complete game in as many starts this season. Marshall conceded only four hits through six innings to hold the Warriors to three runs heading into the final frame.
A late rally for ODU began in the sixth, as Knapp led off the inning with a solo home run to right field, his first collegiate long ball. Still trailing by one run in the top of the seventh and final inning, Jack Mathey (Copley, Ohio) led off with a double and later scored on an extra-base hit from Hunt to tie the game at 3-all. A pair of walks followed Hunt's double to load the bases with one out. The next two batters each saw three-ball counts but could not capitalize, leaving the bases stranded and the game in a stalemate.
A one-out home run to left field in the bottom of the seventh gave the Warriors their second walk-off winner of the weekend, 5-3.
Hunt and Devan Nail (Elyria, Ohio) combined for four of ODU's eight hits in the contest with two each.
GAME TWO
The night cap saw the Panthers out hit the Warriors again, 5-4, but once more, ODU needed a late rally to tie the game at 3-3.
Ohio Dominican had a double in the second and third innings, scoring in the later as Thomas Staab (Bellville, Ohio) touched home plate on a fielder's choice. ESU though, scored twice in the second and again in the third to lead 3-1.
Entering on the mound in relief, Myles Martinez (Columbus, Ohio) retired the first five batters he faced to keep ESU at bay in the fourth and fifth frames. ODU took advantage as a one-out homer by Staab tied the contest at 3-3.
A ground ball double play ended any scoring threats for ODU in the sixth inning. In the bottom half, the Panthers attempted to do the same to ESU, but a throwing error on the back end of the turn allowed a runner to go from third base to home for what would be the game-winning run.
Marshall was the lone Panther to muster a hit in the seventh inning as the Panthers fell 4-3.
UP NEXT
Ohio Dominican now turns its focus to Great Midwest Athletic Conference play, as the Panthers are set to host Tiffin in its home and conference opening series on Saturday and Sunday, March 12 and 13.
