Brill Goes Deep to Highlight Day One in East Stroudsburg for Baseball

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. -- The Ohio Dominican baseball team suffered a pair of setbacks Saturday afternoon at East Stroudsburg.

The Panthers dropped the opener in walk-off fashion, 4-3, before losing in the night cap, 13-7. ODU falls to 5-4 this spring, while ESU runs its program-record win streak to 12 games and improves to 13-2 on the season.

GAME ONE

The Warriors jumped out to an early advantage, scoring one run in each of the first three innings of play. ODU though, took a brief advantage in the top of the third inning, as Alex Brill (Amherst, Ohio) hit the team's first home run of the spring to left field. Brill's bomb came with two runners on with one out in the inning.

Scott Rouse (Hinckley, Ohio) did not allow a run after the third and struck out a season-high eight batters over 4.2 innings of work. Derek Bolander (Oregon, Ohio) recorded the final out of the fifth and tossed two more scoreless innings in relief. Bolander has now pitched 7.1 innings this season without allowing a run.

In what was scheduled for seven innings, neither side could scratch across any additional runs after the third frame, sending the game into extras. Ohio Dominican recorded just one hit over the final four innings, and despite a scoreless eighth frame from Tyler Sullivan (Cincinnati, Ohio), the Warriors tagged the right hander for a run in the bottom of the ninth for a two-out walk-off win.

GAME TWO

The second half of the twinbill was moved to a seven-inning contest after the opener went long, and it was ODU that captured the first lead. A leadoff double from Lane Marshall (Wooster, Ohio) in the top of the third inning sparked what would be a two-run frame for the Black & Gold. Marshall and Derek Kutrubs (Brunswick, Ohio) would score on a two-out base hit from Michael Knapp (Elyria, Ohio)

East Stroudsburg then matched the Panthers in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game at 2-all. The Warriors then added five runs in the fourth and six more runs in the fifth frame to enjoy a double-digit advantage, 13-3.

Marshall Flynn (Heath, Ohio) made his 2022 pitching debut, working around a leadoff walk to toss a scoreless sixth inning.

ODU added a run in the fifth, as Brill touched home plate on a single from Devan Nail (Elyria, Ohio). In their final at-bat, the Panthers tallied four runs on just two hits to close the final deficit to 13-7. Thomas Staab (Bellville, Ohio) highlighted the final-inning rally with a RBI single up the middle in his first appearance of 2022.

UP NEXT

ODU and ESU are scheduled to close out a four-game weekend series with a doubleheader beginning at 11:30 a.m., Sunday, March 6.
