Softball Earns Series Split After Marathon Afternoon Against Findlay

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

COLUMBUS, Ohio – It's been 1,097 days since the University of Findlay and the Ohio Dominican softball team last competed in Central Ohio but on Tuesday afternoon that streak was snapped as the two Great Midwest Athletic Conference foes met in conference play. The game was postponed following bone-chilling temperatures on Sunday afternoon and rescheduled to Tuesday afternoon.

The Black and Gold took a 7-1 victory in game one before falling 4-3 in a ten-inning affair.

GAME ONE

ODU opened the contest by scoring a run in the first three innings. Kaleigh Golden (Thornville, Ohio) was issued a free pass in the first inning and advanced to second as Braxton Downs (Louisville, Kentucky) came to the plate. Downs hit a double to left field and drove in Golden to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.

Keirah Smetzer (Ashland, Ohio) opened the bottom of the second inning with another walk and advanced to third base on an error from the pitcher. Clever baserunning from the Black and Gold allowed for a double steal and allowed the hosts to double the lead to 2-0.

Golden collected her second hit of the game when she legged out a bunt single. A double off the bat of Erika Case (Holland, Ohio) to right-center field extended the lead to 3-0. Neither team crossed the plate until the sixth inning until the Panthers added four more runs to their tally to lock up the win.

Smetzer opened the sixth with another free pass and advanced to second off a single from Baylee Adams (Cardington, Ohio). A sacrifice bunt from Gracie Jo Thompson (Ashville, Ohio) allowed Smetzer to score. A single up the middle from Alli Madden (Cincinnati, Ohio) moved Adams to third. Madden stole second base to put runners in scoring position. Madison Shemwell (Owensboro, Kentucky) reached first on an error from the first basemen, allowing Adams to score. A throwing error from the Findlay catcher let Madden score as Shemwell moved to second.

Alexis Stevens (Marion, Ohio) singled and swelled the lead to 7-0. The Oilers tallied one run in the seventh, but it wasn't enough as they fell 7-1.

GAME TWO

As was the case in the first contest, ODU went to work early in the contest scoring two runs in the early innings. A single from Downs allowed the Black and Gold to collect a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Smetzer added another run with a single up the middle that collected an RBI.

Case collected the Black and Gold's first home run in eight contests when she bombed her third career home run over the left-field fence to give the hosts a 3-0 lead. Findlay tied the game in the top of the seventh inning and claimed the 4-3 victory with an RBI single in the top of the 10th inning.

UP NEXT

The Panthers hit the road and make the short commute up Interstate-71 to battle the Ashland Eagles as G-MAC action rolls on. The doubleheader begins at 3 PM.
