Box Score 2 HARROGATE, Tenn – Ohio Dominican softball concluded its weekend trip to Tennessee on Sunday afternoon. The Black and Gold fell to Maryville University by the score of 4-1 during the first game and were downed 3-2 by Davenport University in the weekend finale.
GAME ONE
Despite scoring just one run in the contest, ODU looked threatening early. Allison Madden (Cincinnati, Ohio) got the first Black and Gold hit of the day, reaching base with a single to left field. She advanced to second base on a ground out from Braxton Downs (Louisville, Kentucky). Madden nearly scored but a foul out ended the Panthers threat.
ODU continued to push for the opening run as freshman Kaleigh Golden (Thornville, Ohio) opened the second inning with a single to center field. The first-year player made it as far as third base before she was called out at the plate attempting to steal home.
Maryville tallied one run in the fourth and two runs in the fifth inning to jump out to a 3-0 lead heading into the sixth inning. Alexis Stevens (Marion, Ohio) singled to center field following a groundout by Downs. Stevens came around to score after Golden successfully competed a sacrifice fly to give the Black and Gold their first run of the contest. The Saints added another run in the top of the seventh and it proved enough to lift them to the 4-1 victory.
GAME TWO
Davenport began the contest hot, scoring all their runs in the first three innings of the contest. DU tallied one run in the bottom of the first inning and two in the bottom of the third inning. ODU responded in the fifth inning as Marley McDonald (Dublin, Ohio) singled up the middle to get the Panther rally going. Golden added another single, giving the Black and Gold "ducks on the pond."
Freshman Liana Morreale (Gibsonia, Pennsylvania) pinch hit later in the inning and collected her first collegiate hit with an RBI triple that scored two runners. ODU collected just two more hits as the comeback attempt fell short with Davenport collecting the 3-2 victory.
UP NEXT
The Black and Gold continue their travels, heading to Owensboro, Kentucky, next weekend to compete in the Blue Bridge Battle. The tournament lasts from February 25-27.
