Box Score 2 WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Ohio Dominican baseball team began its 2022 season Wednesday, but suffered a pair of setbacks at California (Pa.).
The Panthers allowed just one hit in the opener, but dropped the contest 1-0 in seven innings. The second half of the twinbill saw the Vulcans claim an 8-0 victory.
GAME ONE
ODU and Cal U combined for just four hits in the season opener for both sides. Scott Rouse (Hinckley, Ohio) pitched a complete game, allowing one run on one hit, while striking out seven batters.
The lone hit allowed by Rouse came in the bottom of the first, which was a leadoff home run for Cal U. Ohio Dominican was able to get a runner in scoring position in the first, fifth and seventh innings, but could not capitalize.
In its final at-bat, ODU received a leadoff single from Alex Brill (Amherst, Ohio) and a walk from Devan Nail (Elyria, Ohio) to place runners on first and second with one out. A fly out and fielder's choice followed though, resulting in the 1-0 win for Cal U.
GAME TWO
The Vulcans enjoyed another strong pitching performance, holding the Panthers to just four hits over nine innings of work. Zac Wilson (Hamilton, Ohio) headlined the offensive output in the nightcap, going 2-for-4.
Cal U tagged ODU for four runs over the first three innings to jump out to an early advantage. Ohio Dominican left seven runners stranded, including two in the sixth inning.
Andrew Deyhle (Cincinnati, Ohio) highlighted ODU's relief effort, tossing a clean eighth inning, allowing just one hit.
UP NEXT
The Panthers and Vulcans will conclude their three-game series at Wild Things Park with a 1 p.m. first pitch on Sunday, Feb. 20.
