Football Upsets #19 UIndy in Double Overtime Thriller

Box Score

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Ohio Dominican defense denied Indianapolis on fourth down in double overtime, as the Panthers upset the No. 19 Greyhounds 19-16 in football action Saturday afternoon.

The Panthers have now won three straight games, concluding the month of September with a 3-1 record. ODU has won eight straight road games, extending their top five active streak in NCAA Division II.

The Greyhounds, prior to a three-point loss to Tiffin last week, had won 14 consecutive games at Key Stadium, but drop their second straight to fall to 2-2 overall this season. ODU's win marks the first time since 2010 that UIndy has dropped back-to-back games at home.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • A low scoring first half saw UIndy take a 9-7 lead into the intermission.

  • ODU's lone score of the first half came on a 31-yard touchdown pass from Evan Ernst (Mason, Ohio) to James Morgan (Columbus, Ohio)

  • The third quarter belonged to the Panthers, as ODU outgained UIndy 106-28 in total offense for the period. The Black & Gold received a 28-yard field goal from Jed Quackenbush (Newark, Ohio) and a one-yard rushing score by Frederick Pitts V (Huber Heights, Ohio) to take a 16-9 lead.

  • Still leading by seven points in the fourth quarter, Quackenbush backed the Greyhound offense inside their own one-yard line with a 44-yard punt.

  • UIndy though, converted four third downs and fourth and goal from the ODU 18-yard line to score a touchdown and conclude a 21-play, 99-yard drive.

  • The drive spanning nearly 10 minutes left the game in a 16-16 stalemate with 1:22 to play in the fourth quarter.

  • Ernst guided the Panther offense into UIndy territory, leaving ODU with a 39-yard field goal attempt with two seconds showing on the clock.

  • After four consecutive time outs called, three by the Greyhounds, UIndy's push at the line on Quackenbush's attempt was good enough to force a block and send the game to overtime.

  • UIndy had the opening possession in the first overtime and as a receiver attempted to back into the endzone, Desdamon Lake (Youngstown, Ohio) forced and recovered a fumble to keep the Greyhounds off the scoreboard.

  • ODU was forced into another field goal attempt, which could have won the game in the first overtime, but the attempt went wide left.

  • Quackenbush was able to convert on a 29-yard field goal try to open the second overtime.

  • Indianapolis had a fourth and one scenario on the ensuing possession. After originally lining up for a field goal attempt, the offense came back onto the field after a Panther timeout.

  • The Greyhounds attempted to pick up the one yard and keep the drive alive, forgoing the field goal attempt to tie the game.

  • After the initial rush was stopped at the line of scrimmage, Lake and Daishaun Hill (Rocky River, Ohio) met the UIndy runner on the outside, making the tackle behind the first down marker to secure the win for the Black & Gold.

BOX SCORE NOTES

  • ODU entered Saturday dropping their past four games against nationally ranked opponents. The last top 25 win for ODU came against Ashland on Sept. 8, 2018.

  • With the win, head coach, Kelly Cummings, moves into sole possession of second all-time on the Panthers' coaching list with 37 victories. Cummings, in his sixth season at the helm, trails only Bill Conley, who finished his coaching stint at ODU with 46 wins.

  • Saturday marked the program's first double overtime game in its 18-year history. ODU has now only played two overtime games since its inception in 2004.

  • Indianapolis, who entered the game averaging 190.0 rushing yards per game, were held to 112 yards on 34 carries by the Panther defense.

  • Just two weeks removed from a 270-yard rushing performance, Toriano Clinton of UIndy was stymied by ODU to 57 rushing yards on 22 attempts.

  • Lake led the defense with a career-high 16 tackles, including 11 solo stops. He added a tackle for loss and a pass break up to go along with his fumble takeaway in overtime.

  • Dauson Dales (Defiance, Ohio) added 10 tackles, while Aarin Smoot-Baker (Columbus, Ohio) pitched in seven stops, including one sack.

  • Ernst completed 22-of-39 passes for 276 yards and the one score to Morgan. Morgan caught four passes for 54 yards.

  • Austin Davis (Wooster, Ohio) led ODU with seven catches for 91 yards. David Turner (Fort Wayne, Ind.) paced the Panthers with 10 targets, catching six passes for 65 yards.

  • On the ground, Travis Whittaker (Gahanna, Ohio) rushed for 63 yards, including a long carry of 22 yards.

  • ODU enjoyed a 347-315 edge in total offense.
