Baseball Stymied by Hillsdale in Great Midwest Tournament Opening Round

MASON, Ohio -- The Ohio Dominican baseball team opened the 2021 Great Midwest Tournament Wednesday afternoon with a 7-2 loss to Hillsdale. 

Ohio Dominican saw its six-game win streak snapped as the third seeded Panthers were held to just five hits against the sixth seeded Chargers. The Panthers fall to 27-10 overall, while Hillsdale improves to 20-21 this spring.  

BOX SCORE NOTES 

  • Jace Komminsk (Westerville, Ohio) registered the first two hits of the game for ODU, collecting his 10th multi-hit game of the season.  

  • Despite having only five hits, the Panthers did record 13 baserunners, drawing five walks and getting hit by four pitches 

  • ODU left nine runners on base, including seven in scoring position.  

  • Scott Rouse (Hinckley, Ohio) threw 6.1 innings, allowing five runs on 12 hits. Rouse struck out three batters in the start. 

  • Myles Martinez (Columbus, Ohio) pitched the final 2.2 frames allowing two runs and fanning two Chargers. 

  • Thomas Stabb (Bellville, Ohio) entered the game leading NCAA Division II in stolen bases, and swiped two bags on Wednesday, giving him 33 this season.  

GAME SUMMARY 

  • Rouse worked around six hits over the first three innings to keep Hillsdale off the scoreboard. 

  • The freshman right hander retired eight consecutive batters between the third and fifth innings, as ODU and HC were locked in a 0-0 stalemate.  

  • The Chargers finally broke through with three runs on three hits in the sixth inning. Hillsdale then scored at least one run in each of the next three innings for seven total runs. 

  • ODU scored both of its runs on a single from Roger Danison (Carroll, Ohio) to left field.  

  • The Panthers saw their first two batters of the ninth inning reach, but a pair of strikeouts and a fly out concluded the game.  

UP NEXT 

  • Ohio Dominican will return to Prasco Park in Mason, Ohio on Thursday, May 13 for an elimination game against seventh seeded Cedarville. 

  • First pitch is slated for 10 a.m. on Legacy Field.
