Silva Walks Off as Baseball Takes Series Against Walsh

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Sophomore David Silva (Tonotgany, Ohio) walked off the Panthers in Game One Sunday, as Ohio Dominican baseball split its home doubleheader with Walsh.

Silva's walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh gave ODU a 3-2 win over the Cavaliers. Walsh then took the series finale 9-1, but ODU still won the series 3-1.

As a result of the strong weekend, the Panthers improve to 21-9 overall and 13-9 in the Great Midwest. Walsh's win gives the Cavs a conference-high 22 victories overall (22-11), while running their conference mark to 19-9.

BOX SCORE NOTES

  • Silva led the offense for ODU on Sunday, going 4-for-8 overall, including a 3-for-4 effort in the opener.
  • Sophomore Brennen Hunt (Ashland, Ohio) drove in a run each game.
  • The Panthers were held to 10 hits on the day, including just two in the nightcap.
  • Nine different pitchers appeared in the doubleheader for the Black & Gold, which included seven different arms in Game Two.
  • Junior Brendan Hofacre (Chardon, Ohio) had his second strong outing in a row, allowing two runs on four hits over 6.1 innings of work in the opener.
  • Redshirt freshman Myles Martinez (Columbus, Ohio) improve to 3-0 as he pitched 0.2 innings in relief to get ODU out of a bases loaded jam.
  • Four different relievers in Game Two all threw a scoreless frame.

GAME ONE SUMMARY

  • ODU and Walsh combined for four hits over the first three innings of play, as pitching dominated the storyline early on.
  • Solo home runs from sophomore Alex Brill (Amherst, Ohio) in the fourth and Hunt in the fifth had the game tied at 2-2.
  • Walsh scored both of its runs in the top of the fifth, once off a home run and another a sac fly.
  • The Panthers were able to load the bases in the bottom of the sixth with no one out, but a pair of strikeouts followed by a ground out left all three runners stranded.
  • In the top of the seventh, the Cavs had an opportunity with the bases loaded as well.
  • With one in the inning, Martinez rolled a ground ball, as Hunt, Silva and Marshall turned the 6-4-3 double play to get out of the frame unscathed.
  • Marshall then led off the bottom of the seventh and final inning with a base hit up the middle.
  • The freshman first baseman advanced to second on a sac bunt before freshman Andrew Deyhle (Cincinnati, Ohio) came on as a pinch runner.
  • A wild pitch allowed Deyhle to move up to third base with two outs.
  • Silva, down to his last strike, roped a line drive to the left center field fence, which dropped for a base hit to score Deyhle for the game-winning run.
  • The walk-off win was just ODU's second victory this season when scoring three or fewer runs in a game.
  • The Panther win also improves to the team to 6-0 when conceding two runs or less.

GAME TWO SUMMARY

  • The second half of the doubleheader was on a similar low scoring trajectory before the Cavaliers hit three consecutive two-out home runs in the top of the third inning.
  • Walsh eventually pushed its lead to 9-0 through seven complete.
  • The Panthers left eight base runners stranded, scoring just once in the ninth inning.
  • Graduate senior Roger Danison (Carroll, Ohio) posted a leadoff walk and stole two bases before scoring on a sac fly in the final inning.
  • Senior Devon Robb (Kingston, Canada) highlighted the relief efforts on the mound, throwing a scoreless eighth inning, where he struck out two batters.
  • Sophomore Mason Lowder (Westerville, Ohio) also made his season debut, pitching a clean, 1-2-3 ninth inning.
