Panthers Fall In Two Tight Contests At Lincoln Memorial

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

HARROGATE, Tenn – The Ohio Dominican softball team dropped a pair of close results in both contests Sunday at Lincoln Memorial University. The Panthers fell to Davenport University 5-3 in eight innings in game one and 4-3 to Lincoln Memorial University in game two.

During the morning contest, ODU enjoyed a fast start, scoring in the first inning. Sophomore Madison Shemwell (Owensboro, Kentucky) collected one of her two hits in the early going with a single to the shortstop. Some aggressive baserunning moved Shemwell to second when she swiped her first stolen base of the season.

Freshman Baylee Adams (Cardington, Ohio) earned her first collegiate RBI when her single drove in Shemwell from second base. Teammate Braxton Downs (Prospect, Kentucky) drove Adams in when she doubled down the left-field line, giving the Panthers a 2-0 lead.

Davenport answered in the next half-inning, scoring two runs of their own.

Adams continued to pester DU, grabbing another single to begin the third inning. Downs also struck, collecting a double that advanced Adams to third base with just one out. Junior Keirah Smetzer (Ashland, Ohio) earned a bunt single, which drove in Adams to extend the lead to 3-2. DU would tie the game up in the sixth inning and both teams would need extra innings to determine a winner.

Against Lincoln Memorial in game two, the Panthers came out swinging. Alexis Stevens (Marion, Ohio) earned a single during the first at-bat of the game and would be driven home after Shemwell singled down the right-field line. She moved to second base after collecting another stolen base and would be driven in by Downs following a fielder's choice. A wild pitch would drive in Carson Hackerd (Frankfort, Indiana) and give the visitors a 3-0 lead.

LMU responded with two runs of their own to close the gap to 3-2. Neither team would score a run until the bottom of the sixth when two runs from the Railsplitters allowed them to capture the lead and the victory.
