Box Score 2 WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Ohio Dominican's softball team swept day two in thrilling fashion with a 6-5 12-inning win over Quincy to begin the day before defeating Slippery Rock 5-1 later in the day.
In game one senior Cameron Barber (Powell, Ohio) and Tanksley of Quincy went head-to-head in the circle as both starters did not allow a run through the first seven innings.
Barber allowed just three hits through the first seven innings while Tanksley gave up just four hits to the Panther offense through the first seven. Each team was able to break through with a run each in the eighth inning.
ODU opened the top half of the eighth with Madison Shemwell (Owensboro, Ky.) being placed on second via the international tiebreaker and came around to score on an error by the catcher.
After Quincy had a runner placed on second to start the bottom half of the eighth, Barber was able to get a pair out to start the inning but a two-out single from the Hawks scored their runner to tie the game at 1-1 heading to the ninth. '
Both the Panthers and the Hawks went were unable to score in the ninth and 10th before both teams broke out for a pair in the 11th.
With Carson Hackerd (Frankfort, Ind.) placed on second base to start the inning, freshman Braxton Downs (Prospect, Ky.) doubled which scored Hackerd and Landry Slider (Stow, Ohio) had a sac bunt reaching first base on a fielders' choice to advance Downs to third. Then, Taylor Farmer (Mt. Blanchard, Ohio) singled to score Downs and Barber helped her own cause at the plate with a sacrifice fly that scored Slider to put the Panthers up 4-1 heading to the bottom half.
In that bottom half of the 11th, Quincy would also score three times to continue the game into the 12th.
In the top half of the 12th, with Kristen Bales (Pickerington, Ohio) placed on second, a groundout and a lineout saw the Panthers with two out and Bales on third. Then, Hackerd singled to center to bring Bales in and after a Downs walk, a Slider single brought Hackerd in from second as ODU brought some two out magic to the plate to take a 6-4 lead that they would not give up.
Freshman Olivia Rettke (Reynoldsburg, Ohio) earned the win throwing the last 1.1 giving up one run in the bottom half of the 12th on one hit but was able to get out of the jam. Barber threw the first 10.2 innings giving up four runs, one earned, on seven hits with a pair of strikeouts.
Tanksley of Quincy threw all 12 innings for the Hawks giving up six runs, three earned on nine hits with six strikeouts and four walks.
Downs, Meents and Farmer all had two hits for the Panthers while Slider had a pair of RBI's to lead the offense for ODU in game one.
In game two, Slippery Rock broke through first scoring one in the top half of the third to take a 1-0 lead. The Panthers would answer to take the lead in the bottom half of the third. Hackerd led off the inning with a single back-to-back bunt singles from Bales and Slider loaded the bases with nobody out. Then Farmer broke through ripping a single through the left side that scored Hackerd to tie the game at 1-1. After a fly out and a pop out, Brooklyn Rayburn (Reynoldsburg, Ohio) singled to left to bring Bales home before an Addison Smodilla (Terre Haute, Indiana) walk with the bases loaded brought in another Panther run to put the Panthers up 3-1.
After a scoreless fourth inning, the Panthers would add insurance runs in both the fifth and the sixth innings. Shemwell doubled in the fifth to score Rayburn and Raemon Meents (Downers Grove, Ill.) scored on a passed ball in the sixth to make the score 5-1.
Sophomore Sydney Long (Ashland, Ohio) threw the second game for the Panthers going the distance giving up just the one run and scattered seven hits with seven strikeouts.
Hackerd and Rayburn led the Panther offense each going 3-for-3 at the plate while Bales also notched a pair of hits to lead the offense in the second game.
The Panthers advance to 6-10 overall and will be back in action Monday as they take on UMSL and Truman at 2:30 p.m. and 4:45 p.m.
