Box Score 2 WESTFIELD, Ind. – Ohio Dominican's softball team dropped both contests on day one of the Midwest Crossover falling 6-2 to West Liberty and 10-8 to Southern Indiana in the second half of the doubleheader.
In game one, the Panthers were held to just three hits as Taylor Farmer (Mt. Blanchard, Ohio), freshman Braxton Downs (Prospect, Ky.) and Brooklyn Rayburn (Reynoldsburg, Ohio) all recording hits.
West Liberty jumped on the Panthers scoring a run in the top of the first and scoring three more times in in the top of the third. The Panthers would answer with a run of their own in the bottom half of the third as Kierah Smetzer (Ashland, Ohio) scored on a fielders' choice from Downs. The Hilltoppers would score twice more in the sixth to take a 6-1 lead before Farmer's double scored Downs in the bottom half of the sixth.
Downs had three more hits in game two with a pair of RBI's while Landry Slider (Stow, Ohio) had a pair of hits with three RBI's, while Farmer, Raemon Meents (Downers Grove, Ill.) and Carson Hackerd ( each had a pair of hits.
Game two saw the Panthers jump on the Eagles scoring twice in the first inning. Downs tripled to right center which brought Hackerd in and Slider knocked Downs in with a single. USI would answer, tying the game with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the second.
ODU would regain the lead as Hackerd scored Meents on a single to center. With two on, Slider singled to left to bring in Downs and Madison Shemwell (Owensboro, Ky.) to take a 5-2 lead. Later in the inning, Farmer singled up the middle to bring Slider in as the Panthers would have a 6-2 lead through the third and fourth inning.
However, USI would score seven times in the bottom half of the fourth to regain a lead they would not give up. In the top half of the sixth, Meents singled to left field to bring in Kristen Bales (Pickerington, Ohio) to bring the Panthers within two at 9-7 before USI would grab another run in the bottom half of the sixth.
In the seventh inning, another Downs double scored Shemwell to bring the score to within 10-8 but two more outs shut the Panther rally down.
ODU returns to action tomorrow as they play Truman at 10 a.m. before playing the host in #10 Indianapolis at 2 p.m.
