Box Score 2 HARROGATE, Tenn. – Ohio Dominican's softball team split a doubleheader defeating McKendree in game one by a final score of 7-5 before falling late to No. 13 Lincoln Memorial 3-0 Saturday evening in Harrogate, Tennessee.
Senior Landry Slider (Stow, Ohio) led the Panther offense with three hits on the day with three RBI's while Carson Hackerd (Frankfort, Ind.) had a pair of hits in each game including the only RBI in game two.
In game one, the Panthers used a six run second inning to gather a lead they would not give up. After McKendree scored once in the top half of the first, the Panthers jumped on the Bearcats. After back-to-back singles from Brooklyn Rayburn (Reynoldsburg, Ohio) and Taylor Farmer (Mt. Blanchard, Ohio), junior catcher Raemon Meents (Downers Grove, Ill.) grounded to first where the first basemen overthrew the catcher and allowed Rayburn to score to begin the scoring for the Panthers. After a Carson Hackerd (Frankfort, Ind.) single to load the bases, Madison Shemwell (Owensboro, Ky.) walked to bring Farmer home to give the Panthers a 2-1 lead.
Still with the bases loaded, Slider doubled down the left field line to clear the bases and give ODU a 5-1 lead but the inning was not over for the Panther offense. Freshman Braxton Downs (Prospect, Ky.) singled to left center and a Cameron Barber (Powell, Ohio) double brought Slider in to score to cap the inning.
McKendree would get a run back in the top half of the third but the Panthers answered with a run of their own as Shemwell singled to right field to bring Meents around to score and make it 7-2. After a scoreless fourth inning, McKendree would score a run in each of the final three innings but were unable to complete the comeback.
Barber earned the win in the circle throwing a complete game giving up five runs on nine hits with five strikeouts.
Game two saw sophomore Sydney Long (Ashland, Ohio) not allow a run through five innings while only giving up three hits before the nationally-ranked Railsplitters scored four times on five hits in the bottom half of the sixth inning.
With one out in the seventh, Rayburn reached on an error and Farmer singled through the right side to put a pair on for the Panthers. After a strikeout, Hackerd doubled to right center which brought Rayburn in to score for the only Panther run of the game.
ODU stranded seven runners in the game and fell to 1-3 in the early season. The Panthers will play McKendree and No. 13 Lincoln Memorial once again tomorrow with game times of 12:30 p.m. and 3 p.m.
