Baseball Picks Up Sweep Of Cedarville

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio Dominican's baseball team took two games from visiting Cedarville on Tuesday, winning the opener 7-1 and the second contest 15-8 in G-MAC play at Panther Valley.

The Panthers finished with just six hits in the opener, but capitalized on seven Cedarville walks and a terrific effort on the mound from senior Mitchell Bault (Maineville, Ohio).

Bault tossed all 7.0 innings, allowing just five hits and fanning nine without issuing a walk. He threw 68 of his 100 pitches for strikes, and his first punchout of the game represented his 200th career strikeout.

Cedarville scored a run on a groundout in the first inning, but it was all ODU from there. Sophomore Tim Zeller (Mount Vernon, Ohio) tied the game in the bottom half with a sac fly, and freshman Thomas Staab (Bellville, Ohio) hit a two-run single down the right field line in the second inning to give ODU a 3-1 lead.

The Panthers then loaded the bases in the third inning, and senior Noah Bland (Oberlin, Ohio) hit a ball into the gap in right-center that scored all three runs. Freshman Manny Vorhees (Wapakoneta, Ohio) followed with a sac fly to score Bland and make it 7-1.

Staab and Kaucher each went 2-for-3 to lead the ODU offense, while junior Joey Machuga (Canfield, Ohio) and Jonathan Conkle (Massillon, Ohio) each walked twice.

In game two, ODU found itself in a 4-1 hole going to the bottom of the third before answering in a big way. The Panthers took advantage of four Cedarville error, as well as four walks and five stolen bases, to plate seven runs in the inning and go in front 8-4.

ODU then broke it open with a six-run fourth inning, capped off by Staab's bases-clearing triple to left-center, to take a 14-4 lead.

Senior Chris Sackett (Loveland, Ohio) went 3-for-4 and Zeller and freshman Michael Lang (Cincinnati, Ohio) each had two hits. Staab walked four times, while Zeller and Machuga each drew two.

Ohio Dominican remains home for a four-game series with Walsh, beginning with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday in Panther Valley.
